[edit] Biography
[edit] Early life
Juhi Chawla was the first child born to Punjabi parents Mona Chawla and a Dr. S Chawla. She has one brother named Sanjeev. She graduated from Sydenham College, Mumbai [1].
She was the winner of Miss India title in 1984, later she won Best Costume Award for the Miss Universe contest in 1984 [2]
[edit] Career
From beauty contests, she moved into film - with her movie debut being Sultanat in 1986. She starred a Kannada film titled Premaloka which was a hit. Her first big hit in Bollywood was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak [3] in 1988, in which she starred with Aamir Khan. Following films did not do as well.
Chawla made a special appearance in the film Chandni (1989) produced by Yash Raj Films. She was later cast in the critically accliamed Aaina (1993) opposite Jackie Shroff, and then in one of her biggest hits Darr (1993) with Sunny Deol and Shahrukh Khan [4].
She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1993 for Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke [5]. Her pairing with Aamir Khan has been repeatedly successful with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1989), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) [6] and later on Ishq (1997) becoming hits [7].
She has teamed up successfully with Shahrukh Khan too, delivering his first big hit Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992) [8] and then later on with Darr (1993) [4] and Yes Boss (1997) [9].
Juhi later turned producer and became the co-owner of a production company called Dreamz Unlimited with Shahrukh Khan and director Aziz Mirza [10]. Unfortunately the first two films produced by the production company - Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Asoka failed at the box office. Their third film, Chalte Chalte was the first success for the company [11].
Juhi has recently appeared in the critically acclaimed films - 3 Deewarein [12], 7½ Phere [13] and My Brother Nikhil for which Taran Adarsh went as far as saying that her performance was amongst the finest in her career [14]. She won a Star Screen Award Best Supporting Actress for 3 Deewarein [15].
She was recently seen in Nikhil Advani's Salaam E Ishq: A Tribute To Love for which she got good reviews for her performance [16]. She also starred with fellow contemporary Urmila Matondkar in Bas Ek Pal (2006). Juhi's forthcoming releases include Ravi Chopra's Bhoothnath with Amitabh Bachchan and another film called Swami [17].
[edit] Personal life
Juhi Chawla is married to industrialist Jai Mehta and is the mother of two children [18].
She gave birth to her first child, a girl, on February 21, 2001 [19]. Her daughter's name is Jhanvi [20]. Chawla later gave birth to a son called Arjun [20].
Her mother was killed in Prague by a driver who ran over her with his car during the shooting of Duplicate.[citation needed]
