IMDb profile |
Kal Ho Naa Ho (Hindi कल हो ना हो, Urdu: کل ہو نہ ہو, English: Tomorrow May Or May Not Be) is a 2003 Bollywood film set in New York City. It stars Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Saif Ali Khan. The film was directed by first-timer Nikhil Advani; it was produced and co-written by Karan Johar, better known as the director of the hit films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001).
This movie resembles Dil Chahta Hai (2001) in blending Bollywood and Hollywood conventions with high production values. While copyright violation has long run rampant in the Bollywood film industry, Kal Ho Naa Ho is notable for having licensed the rights to Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" for an extended musical sequence taking place in the streets in New York.
Because of its familiar setting and music, accessibility to non-Indians, good production values, and respect for copyright, Kal Ho Naa Ho has been used to introduce Bollywood to markets where Indian films have been rare.

[edit] Synopsis
Naina (Preity Zinta) is an angry young woman, slightly ticked off for more than one reason. Her father committed suicide when she needed him the most, leaving Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan), his wife, all alone. Lajjo (Sushma Seth), Jennifer's mother-in-law, blames Jennifer for the suicide. Furthermore, Jennifer is unhappy because Lajjo refuses to accept Gia, a 6-year old girl whom Jennifer adopted. Even the restaurant Jennifer is running is faltering. In short, nothing is going well on the Kapur family front. the only factors that redeem Naina's existence are the toiling and tolerant Jennifer, and Naina's bumbling MBA classmate Rohit (Saif Ali Khan)
Meanwhile, Aman (Shah Rukh Khan), a happy-go-lucky guy arrives in Naina's neighbourhood and soon changes everything around, thanks to his contagious joviality and zest for life. He proves to be the messiah for the Kapur family in every way. Naina is hesitant initially but cannot remain unaffected by his charisma for long, and she falls in love with him. On the contrary, some platonic moments arouse Rohit's fondness for Naina a bit more and he falls in love with her. But when Naina thinks of confessing her love to Aman, she realises that Aman is a married man.
But later, it is revealed that Aman lied about being married because he is a heart patient and has limited time to live. But since Aman loves Naina too, he wants someone's love to embrace Naina after he dies and he finds Rohit suitable. Rohit is somehow coaxed by Aman to re-think his relation with Naina. Aman plans a strategic set of efforts and brings Rohit and Naina close. But when Naina finds out the truth, pangs of helpless love follow. Aman meets his decided fate, but not before changing Naina's life forever.
[edit] Trivia
- This is the third movie in which Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee all appear together - both ladies are seen for a few seconds dancing during the song "Maahi Ve". The other movies are Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Newly added to this list of appearing together, SRK, Kajol, and Rani were all in the song "Rock 'N' Roll Soniye" in "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna". They have also appeared together in Koffee with Karan.
- Shahrukh Khan sustained a major injury to his back early in the shooting but continued with the filming.[citation needed]
- Shah Rukh Khan did not like "Oh, Pretty Woman", feeling it should have Hindi lyrics instead.[citation needed]
- The rights to Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" were bought for use as the title of one of the songs and part of an otherwise original song.
- One of the twins from Main Hoon Na can be seen as a background dancer in the song Maahi Ve.
- You can spot producer Karan Johar and choreographer Farah Khan sitting on a table during the sequence where the restaurant is re-decorated.
- The "Day Six Announcer" is played by the actor Uday Chopra.
- Aman's doctor is played by actress Sonali Bendre.
- It was the second Bollywood film to attain wide release in Germany in early 2005 (the first was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham). The Hindi title was translated as Lebe und denke nicht an morgen ("Live, and don't think about tomorrow") but the film was generally publicized under the somewhat prosaic (English) title Indian Love Story. Since its release, Bollywood has become a popular genre in Germany, and other Indian films have also been shown on prime time television and have sold well on DVD. [1]
- The film was released in France in 2005 as New-York Masala.
- It was released in Poland in May 2006 as Gdyby jutra nie bylo (If Tomorrow Never Comes).
- During the filming of the song Kuch To Hua Hai Priety Zinta fell on her back.[citation needed]
- The role which Preity Zinta had played was meant to be doned by Kareena Kapoor however she was asking for a high price which Karan Johar couldn't afford.
- This film is thought to inspired from Bollywood classic Anand starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. Shahrukh Khan potrayed the role of Rajesh Khanna. But eventually Karan Johar denied such news and quoted that it has no match with Anand as it is a classic movie of Bollywood
