Kansas City (Oklahoma!)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Kansas City" is a song from the musical Oklahoma!. In this 1942 light opera, the plot set-up for this tune is the return of cowboy Will Parker from an excursion to Kansas City. He describes his experiences in song.
The tune starts out:
- I got to Kansas City on a Frid'y,
- By Satiday I learnt a thing er two..."
- Everythings up to date in Kansas City,
- They've gone about as fur as they can go..."
The song continues to describe the wonders of this city and its entertainments (from the viewpoint of a country bumpkin), all reprising with the concept that the conditions (in 1906) represent the ultimate in progress with little more expected.
[edit] Trivia
The building mentioned in the song that is 7 stories tall is most likely the NEW YORK LIFE building, which was the tallest building in Kansas City at the turn of the twentieth century.
