Hi - you removed the {{PD-USGov-NASA}} tag from this image, saying it was not a NASA image. Actually, it's created from Hubble Space Telescope images so the tag does apply. Thanks! Worldtraveller 17:34, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

You made an edit with the tag, "(Astronomy Pic of the Day not considered suitable ref. by FA review.)" I was wondering what that means - is that Featured Article review? Does that mean featured articles shouldn't have APOD as a reference, or that a peer reviewer decided it was inadequate?

Hi Keflavich. The tag was based on a comment in the FA review: Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates#Orion_Nebula. "I am also a little bit concerned about the quality of some of the references. For example, I don't think an Astronomy Picture of the Day is a good reference to cite for the size of the nebula". As the size is just derived from the nebula distance and angular size anyway, it can just be calculated directly. Most sources I've read also give a dimension of 30 LY, so the APoD size could be considered incorrect and even confusing. — RJH 14:15, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi, take a look at Grays Peak. Someone has claimed that the picture (which I think you contributed--tell me if I'm wrong) is actually of Torreys from Grays, and not vice versa. DO NOT USE THE DISTANCES AUTOMATICALLY CALCULATED BY NED!

NED bases its calculations on a flow-corrected distance model. For many galaxies, this is a rough estimate of the distance. For NGC 4569, however, this is horrible. NGC 4569 lies within the Virgo Cluster and hence has a strong peculiar velocitiy that causes it to deviate strongly from the Hubble flow. As a result, automatically-calculated flow-corrected distances for NGC 4569 and anything near the Virgo Cluster are going to be inaccurate. (Ask me about the referee's report that I received for my paper on NGC 4594.) Dr. Submillimeter 22:58, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Tonry et al. (2000) and Karachentsev et al. (2004) both have nice lists of distance measurements. Both of those papers are good references to work with, although neither is complete to the distance of the Virgo Cluster. Dr. Submillimeter 07:57, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Planck's law does not give a flux density. Therefore, the units of the quantity calculated from Planck's law should not be Jy.

Also, to convert between $I ν$ and $I λ$ , use

$d\nu=\frac{-c}{\lambda^2}d\lambda$

As you can see from this relation, when tthe $I λ$ form of Planck's law is derived from the $I ν$ form, the function contains a $\frac{c^2}{\lambda^5}$ term. Dr. Submillimeter 00:52, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Planck's law can be used to calculate colors that are useful for scientific study (e.g. astrophysics). However, translating those colors into what the human eye sees may require additional information which I do not have on hand. You may be interested in the article on color temperature, which is the temperature that is obtained when fitting Planck's law to a series of flux measurements at specific wavelengths.
