Kerry Prendergast

Kerry Prendergast has served as the Mayor of Wellington, New Zealand since 2001. She is Wellington's second female mayor. She is currently standing for her third term and stands an excellent chance with little opposition on the horizon. She is Deputy President of Local Government NZ, is on the Board of Wellington International Airport Ltd, chairs the Regional Mayoral Forum for the Wellington Region. Instigated the policy, now taken up by the city, of "Creative Capital" and "Smartest Little Capital in the World".
Before entering politics, Prendergast worked as a midwife and a nurse. She gained election to the Tawa Borough Council (now integrated into Wellington city) in 1986, and joined the Wellington City Council in 1989. In 1995, she became Deputy Mayor under Mark Blumsky.
She became Mayor in the 2001 local-body election, and in October 2004 gained re-election for a second term.
