Talk:Kevin Gullikson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about a college basketball player who was a freshman this year and will continue to contribute to the Wisconsin Badgers, and therefore should merit his own page. I've seen far less important people with their own pages on Wikipedia, and Gullikson certainly deserves at least a stub about a College Basketball Player. Mientkiewicz5508 00:36, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- The above comment is clearly about the Proposed deletion tag I added. From Wikipedia:Notability (people) (which is only a guideline), the applicable criteria would be Sportspeople/athletes who have played in a fully professional league, or a competition of equivalent standing in a non-league sport such as swimming, or at the highest level in mainly amateur sports, including college sports in the United States. Articles about first team squad members who have not made a first team appearance may also be appropriate, but only if the individual is at a club of sufficient stature that most members of its squad are worthy of articles. I don't think college basketball players while they're in college, particularly while they're underclassmen, generally meet this criteria. If he continues to contribute to the Badgers, and goes on to be a pro, somebody will create an article. If there are less important people with their own pages on Wikipedia, perhaps they should be deleted. The way prod works, if anybody objects the article stays, unless someone takes it to WP:AFD and there's a consensus to delete it. This article doesn't exactly bother me, but in 4 years if he's not a pro someplace and didn't have a fabulous college career I hope somebody will get around to deleting it. -- Rick Block (talk) 02:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I can't believe you said "I don't think college basketball players while they're in college...generally meets this criteria". Anyways, Gullikson had quite a bit of playing time in the 2005 season, so I don't think that the "Articles of first team squad members who have not made a first team appearance MAY also be appropriate" tag fits here, as he played a great deal during the season, and even got playing time during the NCAA tournament. I do agree however that if his college career isn't memorable/notable in any way and he doesn't have any aspirations to play in the NBA that it would be appropriate for deletion, but while he is a current member of the team there is reason to have his own entry.Mientkiewicz5508 02:08, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

- I'm not going list this article at AfD, just trying to understand your viewpoint. Maybe I'm being dense, but as I read the guideline including college sports in the United States pertains only to mainly amateur sports (which basketball clearly is not). I'm guessing you're reading it to mean any college sport, whether it's a mainly amateur sport or not. I'll bring this up at at the guideline's talk page, where I see this clause has recently been discussed (see Wikipedia talk:Notability (people)#MAJOR disagreement with inclusiveness of sportspeople) seemingly with every commenter supporting (what I assume to be) your interpretation (and I thought it prettly clearly meant only mainly amateur sports;) ). Please join the discussion there. -- Rick Block (talk) 14:52, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Trimmed
I trimmed some extraneous material from this bio. This is an encyclopedia, not a press kit or place to keep track of his current season scoring milestones. --ZimZalaBim (talk) 02:49, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
