[edit] Introduction
The King of the DeathMatch is a fighting tournament organized by young adults in Medford MA, and also features single elimination tournament style fighting for 8 men; the winner to be crowned the King of the DeathMatch. The "DeathMatch" tournaments are free to enter and free to watch, consisting mainly of friends squaring off against one another without the use of weapons. Punching, kicking, body slamming, choking, and various other submissions are applied and a match is declared over when one of the fighters submits. Some of the fighters involved in DeathMatch include Chris Murphy, Nick Cerasuolo, Luke V., Charlie Falco, Ryan Donovan, Kevin Braxton, Chris Coughlin, and Dan Marino. All of the DeathMatches have been filmed, and the title belts still exist today.
[edit] History
There have been four DeathMatch Tournaments to date, ranging in location from Medford, MA (in a grassy field), Somerville, MA (also in a field), and Chelsea, MA (inside an abandoned, condemned warehouse). Though DeathMatch began as a tournament, it has branched out to include a singles competition (for no reward or advancement), a "two on two" tournament and even a girl versus girl "Queen of the DeathMatch" fight. The DeathMatch Tournament and the Two on Two Tournament both have home made title belts as a reward. The King of the DeathMatch tournament was created by Dan Marino in 2004 after he made a "DeathMatch Championship" title belt out of cardboard and posterboard. On August 13, 2004, 8 friends gathered for some friendly competition over the title belt in the city of Medford. A small crowd formed and by the end of the night, DeathMatch 2 was already in the works. Deathmatch 2 took place in Somerville on September 24, 2004, and was the first DeathMatch to feature non-tournament fighting. The crowd at DeathMatch 2 doubled in size from that of DeathMatch 1 and everyone involved celebrated the success of the second DeathMatch together afterwards. DeathMatch 3 occurred on December 4, 2004 and was the first DeathMatch to take place in the abandoned warehouse in Chelsea. Though the crowd was smaller, the fights were just as good.
[edit] The Chelsea Incident
The same Chelsea Warehouse was the location for DeathMatch4: DeathMania, which took place on March 18, 2005. DeathMatch4 went down in infamy, as the close of the night brought with it numerous Chelsea Police, fire fighters, and E.M.T.'s to the warehouse. No serious injuries occurred, but the police held everyone involved for trespassing and later charged eleven fighters with misdemeanors of unlawful boxing and trespassing. In addition, the creator was charged with the felony of unlawful boxing promotion. The police seized the title belts and video tape of the nights events. All of the charges against the fighters were dropped immediately, and the tapes and title belts were returned to the creator nearly two years later. Though there has not been a DeathMatch Tournament in over a year, there is still hope for a return.
