Kingdom of Odoacer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kingdom of Odoacer, or Kingdom of Italy, was the realm ruled by the first Germanic king of the Italian peninsula between 476 and 493. In 476, Odoacer had officially been confirmed by Zeno, the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire as the King of Italy (rex Italiae). However as Odoacer's kingdom expanded this worried the Eastern Emperor, who came to see Odoacer as a rival.
Starting in 490, Odoacer was besieged at Ravenna by Theodoric the Great, but in the outcome after the three year siege neither side had won the battle. On February 2, 493, Theodoric and Odoacer signed a treaty that assured both parties would rule over Italy. At the banquet organised to celebrate the treaty, Odoacer was killed by Theodoric.
