KIEL, GERMANY. THE GERMAN AUXILIARY CRUISER "KORMORAN", FORMERLY THE HAMBURG-AMERIKA LINE MS "STEIERMARK", TAKING ON STORES FROM A LIGHTER IN THE HARBOUR, IN PREPARATION FOR HER ROLE AS AN ARMED MERCHANT RAIDER. FOR APPROXIMATELY TWELVE MONTHS SHE WAS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN, WHERE SHE HAD CONSIDERABLE SUCCESS UNTIL HER ENGAGEMENT WITH HMAS SYDNEY. THIS ENGAGEMENT RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF BOTH SHIPS, HMAS SYDNEY WITH ALL HANDS. (PREFER THIS IMAGE TO 069393, A POOR COPY) (DONOR T. DETMERS)
