Ladyboy (Drinks)

A ladyboy is a combination of drinks invented by fictional TV personality, Alan Partridge. The set of bar drinks are a pint of lager with chasers of a small Baileys and a gin and tonic.

Alan named the drinks combination in the I'm Alan Partridge TV series episode Watership Alan with reference to an idle moment where he became confused about his sexuality and was dreaming about the ladyboys of Thailand.
Alan first places for himself a convoluted order for a gin and tonic when alone at the bar. He is joined by his P.A. Lynn, for whom Alan chivalrously orders "one SMALL Baileys". When he is joined by two TV men, he shoos Lynn away, orders pints of lager with the TV men and is forced to improvise a name for the combination of 3 drinks that rests on the bar before him.

In keeping with the events in the Watership Alan episode there is a sequence to follow when drinking a ladyboy:
- Lift the pint of lager, say "Cheeeers!" in Partridge voice to your companions, take a sip and replace the glass.
- Lift the Baileys, sip and replace.
- Lift the gin and tonic, sip and replace.
- Pause for a beat and then utter a strangulated "Ooh, ladyboys".
- Repeat the sipping cycle (minus the two utterances) until all drinks are finished - taking care to sip in proportion to the volume of the glass.
This sequence is called an "Orthodox Ladyboy", as the drinking order follows that in the Watership Alan episode. A popular alternative is the "Unorthodox Ladyboy" where the drinks are consumed in size order (lager, gin and tonic, baileys). This sequence is known to produce an agreeable aftertaste.
Proportional sippings ensures the drinks are all finished at the same time. It is a skill that should be encouraged in newcomers.
For best results Ladyboys should be enjoyed at the bar of the local travel lodge, as it was originally by Alan himself.

While a ladyboy can be much enjoyed when consumed in 3 glasses, it is quite unpleasant when mixed in a single glass. This mixture resembling, inter alia, nasal mucus can be presented to the drinker in the group who a) finishes last, or b) finishes one glass out of step with the other two (owing to a failure of proportional sipping).
