Capital Distinction

Just reading through the article and noticed that the first part of the article states that Lagos ceased to be the capital of Nigeria in 1991, while the last part states that this event occured in 1976. Anyone have an idea about which of these is correct?

Lagos is a hellhole

It might be good to have the article mention some of the downsides of Lagos:

  • The pollution
  • The crime
  • The police checkpoints
  • How dirty it is
  • How all the cars look have crinkled bodies
  • The poverty

I don't think I'm the right person to write this, but right now, the article is very biased.

I made a Crime segment in my update, but I couldn't add too much because I don't like to add things to city articles without references. Totally forgot about pollution. Couldn't find any poverty statistics of note either, although I don't doubt for a second that Lagos is full of it. Nach0king 16:10, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Confusion between Lagos and Lagos State

I'd like to discuss re-doing the pages for Lagos and Lagos State.

"Lagos" is a nebulous concept. When you say Lagos, different people think about different things. Some think of Lagos Island. Others think of the entire state. The entry for "Lagos" talks about the whole state. So does the entry for "Lagos State".

I propose to: (1) Reformat the Lagos State entry to talk about the entire state (2) Change the Lagos entry to talk about eko/Lagos Island.

I'm obviously not a Lagos boy (heck, I'm not Nigerian or even African) so I'm throwing this out there for others who are wiser than I to debate. --User:rjhatl 07:33, 10 Dec 2004 (EST)

Over to you Eko boys, time to tell it as it is, I am not an Eko boy either, but I know that "Lagos or Eko" is quite distinct from "Lagos State", which is a political creation to delineate the areas around Lagos for an easier administration of the "areas around Lagos or Eko".

With a population stretching close to 15 million inhabitants (arguable) or more Lagos State is therefore an administrative area as well as administrative term encompassing areas that are'nt necessarily Eko, in fact this areas, even though inhabited by other yorubas of other stock are in reality very different. The people from Badagry for instance are different from the Eko people and are much closer to the peoples in the Republic of Benin. However, today they are more or less known and regarded as Lagosians as result of the administrative umbrellas that brings them under Lagos State.

You need therefore to take cognisnace of this variations when writing or talking about "Lagos State" and "Lagos". This is common among most of the adminitsrative areas and the communities in Nigeria. An addition also is that, this differences have also provided good analyticaly grounds for some of the problems common in Nigeria. The problems of citizenship and conflicts for instance.

Gallery of street photos

Hello, i'm french and I took some pictures of Lagos in a travel (2003). I upload the photos on the Photogallery FlickR and make a link on this wikipedia page, I did'nt find how to integrate directly the photos in the articles. If you know how to do you can freely use these picture. All the pictures are licensed on the Commons Creative License, so you can do absolutly everything you want : share, redistribute, enhancing...  ;-) contact me if you want (more photos on stock) : zouzou@webalys.com

Contradiction

This article and the article on Abuja both state that Lagos ceased to be the capital of Nigeria in 1991. However, this article also states that this is a misconception and that Lagos ceased to be the capital in or soon after 1976. Which is correct? Schoen 01:25, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

How can you have a Place without Picture

I place a picture link, someone remove it why.

I don't know how you can have a Place without a Picture, but I do know how we can have an Article without a Spamlink. That's why. — mark 17:18, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
MARK , did you read the wikispam.. I have copy it here for you.. how could picture on a website be spam.. I never saw pop up on the site.. I only saw picture.. They never solicitate for business, product or service. on the website, I even saw a link on the site that redirect user to wikipedia , for information about lagos, check it out yourself, you would find Wikipedia links on the site for information. so why the so much cry on spam. it was just picture.. Now tell me about your self, do you own this site.. It is just a question. I want to know...
read below..
There are two types of wikispam: advertisements masquerading as articles, and wide-scale external link spamming. Articles considered advertisements include those that are solicitations for a business, product or service, or are public relations pieces designed to promote a company or individual. Wikispam articles are usually noted for sales-oriented language and external links to a commercial website. A differentiation should be made between spam articles and legitimate articles about commercial entities, however.
—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Peter Henry (talkcontribs).
The site you tried to add, nigeria.tz4.com, brings the visitor, after an awful load of redirects (including www.nigeriaplanet.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=redirhome), to nigeria.mooo.com/preview.html. On that site, it is very difficult to distinguish the commercial offers from the rare useful content. I have waded for ten minutes through that morass of redirects and advertisements and I have not found anything which would make this site qualify as a good external link, as defined in Wikipedia:External links. All links to 'pictures of city X' lead to the aforementioned nigeriaplanet.proboards43.com. What you get if you follow such a link, is a page of which 80% is commercial advertising, on which you can find about five pictures. I think we can do better. In the last months, there have been various attempts to add this site to hundreds of articles related to Nigeria. That is spamming. Indeed, to stop the trouble of having going through this same discussion over and over again, I will have it added to the site-wide spam blacklist. — mark 08:35, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Mark, Why are you so particular,, is there anything wrong... That was not the site with the picture.. he is a link with the site with the picture , it goes directly to the picture.. And I cant see an commercial, can some else try .. Go back to history to check again, do not twist the truth on my, I do not care if you black list or green list... I see you more like a lonely man with nothing better in life to do, I busybody.. go get a life.. get a career, and stop been a slave to the owner of wiki.. you do not get pay.. Check your contribution.. it show you have no life. Do you have a girl friend. Get yourself a career.. Do something withg your life, instead of pinning all your hope in life on Wikipedia.. Nobody give a shit.. about you, the owners would makes money, you just done.. Go get a life.. USe your time wise —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Peter henry (talk • contribs).

I do not see pop up xxx.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=lagospicture —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Peter Henry (talkcontribs). (User:Wikiwizzy broke the link to save this page)

I clicked on that link. I waited, saw google ads come up, and if I paged down saw a lot of small thumbnails, that would probably take me through the same process to view them any bigger. Do you have a picture of Lagos ? Upload it to Commons, and link from this article. The 'picture' above is not acceptable, by a large margin. Wizzy 10:41, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

MARK, YOU NOW CALL YOURSELF Wizzy... On this same page Lagos.. I have found more than one website with google ads... and external links..and some have pop up. the page in question does not have pop up... here are the list.. check them all out and delete them too.. And I would search all of wiki.. with the same google ad and external links , and delete them, I say like 7 million pages. and delete them...and do me, a favour delete them too...

The problem with you MArk , you like to win an agrument, I have seen that more than 3 other people have discuss with you on the same topic... And because you do not want to be a loser, which you are , you keep on , deleting the links.. Grow up... Sometime, you do not win.. So call wizzy, see mark contribution.. here are links with google ad and popo on the page.. let see if you would delete them...

  • The Guardian
  • Vanguard Online Edition - News from Nigeria
  • This Day Online
  • OT Africa Line - Nigeria Page
  • OT Africa Line - Lagos Port Statistics
  • Africa Travelling - Lagos Culture
  • ESource
  • Nigeria Sports World Stadiums - Nigeria

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Peter Henry (talkcontribs).

No, I am most definitely not Wikiwizzy (talk contribs). And yes, Wizzy and I happen to agree that your link has to go. Cut the personal attacks; please see WP:NPA. I am withdrawing from this conversation. — mark 19:41, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
I also note that you tried to delete the links from my request on the spam blacklist. That could be construed as vandalism. It might get you blocked, just like repeated personal attacks and repeated spamming. Just don't. — mark 19:52, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Ok you win, what do you want remove from the page Mr mark —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.195.84.54 (talkcontribs).

Nothing needs to be removed at this time. You now cannot add any links from proboards43.com. We agree this article could use better pictures. Do you have any ? Pictures, not links, please, and first prize would be ones you took yourself, and uploaded to wikimedia commons. Are you from Lagos ? Do you have a digital camera ? Do you know anyone who has ? Wizzy 06:42, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I can only give you link, I do not have camera.. I can send you an external link with picture.. I have no time to go take picture.. if you want link with picture , no commercial , i would get you only since you claim that one have commerical on it, Right, that was your complain, what that not so Wizzy or mark... Remember people have right to those picture too..

You wrote "An agreement have been reach to have the picture commercial free and return back to Wikipedia". I see no evidence of such an agreement, and I don't feel that you should be rewarded after having made several personal attacks and legal threats. It is not OK to have an external site hosting pictures for Wikipedia. If you can prove that you own the copyright to the pictures, you can upload them directly to Wikipedia. If you do not own the copyright, you shouldn't be linking to the site at all. Please stop spamming Wikipedia. Rhobite 16:59, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

I am shock by both of you, if you do a quick research you would know , i have started more topic on wikipedia, than anyone .. from the same remote location.. , even the said page, you claim authority to know, i wrote most of the piece , this you could verified under different name for more than 4 years now.. the said links picture of Nigeria have been there for more 4 years now, under yahoo. with yahoo ad.. nobody raise an eyebrown.. Is there a different reason you people are bend on this.. If it was about mark, mark happen to be a person, who want to win always, and i understand is feeling becuuse he is young..

but be objective is not using moderator power to win a case.. this is what Rhobite is doing.. If Rhobite think he want to contribute to the Page he should go to Nigeria, and get picture of it.. I am not getting paid for doing this, I am only doing wikipedia a favour, but I now regret, that I should not have started the so many topic i did, which some of them are not be use against me.. I know i have learnt my lesson, I would never start any topic against. i would leave you in keeping your over 40 years old knowledge of Africa and Nigeria. Since you it look like you people do not want to see anything good about the place, I have gone thru most of the picture on Wikipedia and some of the so call contribution are irritating, protracting us as thief, take for example the No to correct release by the infamours CIA, some of the information are not correct. When you remove thing like this you PEOPLE IN QUOTE who claim you know us more than US. just come back to insert it.. What is the all purpose of wikipedia, to inform or to MISINFORM.. Change you view Rhobite.. If you are going to be objective be..

You are not God, if been a moderator make you feel on top of the world, please it is not an achieve , the owner of wikipedia get paid, you are just a tool, been use and that can be dispost of any day.. from what i see, from your talk, if you have start your on .com company you would have made money for yourself. but you just spend your energy and time on building another man wealth. This is an Advice to you Rhobite. it is just an advice , you do not have to take.. time is a precious thing... Yestersday have gone, or time you spend on wikipedia have gone ,invest your time and Energy on your own website.. send me your link and may be i can help you... email me at onelove20004j@hotmail.com.. ok. young man..I am too old to talk with you.. Have a nice days. if you think about this thing, and you want to put the links or any of you, please.. I wish you well, may God bless you.. My time is precious.. I have better thing in life to achieve.

bye

You seem to be deliberately misconstruing what editors are saying here. Everyone here wants Wikipedia to have good articles on Nigeria, with beautiful pictures in them. People have very patiently explained the best way to get pictures added to Wikipedia articles. It is not by adding external links, since Wikipedia is not a link directory. So if that's the only way you want to contribute, bye. — mark 09:32, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Mark was this said person is saying is correct, I have gone through past link for the last four years, I have seen this said links with advertise and i have seen other pages , even this page with other external links, so my question to you, your reason does not look good to me.. You give me the impression you have another motive for doing this. What is that motive... I doubt your sincerity ----Smiths Kelvin

There is no other motive. I made myself clear. Might you feel the need to accuse me of racism, go right ahead; the outlandishness of that claim is clear to anyone taking a closer look at my contributions to Wikipedia.
By the way, if you have good pictures of Lagos (or on other Nigerian topics) under a suitable license, why not upload them here? Everyone here agrees that better pictures are always a welcome addition to any articles. — mark 19:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
