The Lanphere Dunes Unit is located in Humboldt County, California near the towns of Arcata and Eureka.
This dune complex consists of waveslope, foredunes, and hollows/swales that include forested areas.
Wiyot Native Americans historically occupied this area prior to European settlement.
Western snowy plover and beach layia are two federally listed species that are found in this habitat.
This area is now protected by the Fish and Wildlife Service Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge System. The dunes are an extraordinary example of dunes succession and is a fragile ecosystem; access is restricted and guided tours are occasionally available.
The dunes were once named the Lanphere-Christensen Dunes Preserve and was managed by the Nature Conservancy.
