[edit] New autoblock
Please help - I am once again blocked by (This time by User:Can't sleep, clown will eat me) due to some other person abusing a Dynamic IP address that has now been allocated to me. Laurens-af 06:49, 3 June 2006 (UTC
- First, try to be civil when reporting that you need unblocked, the administrator that blocked the IP address you're using did so because of the vandalism coming from that IP address. There is no way to keep your account from being blocked at the same time if you are using that IP address. You should be unblocked now. Shell babelfish 11:21, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, there's been several requests to the developers for ways to let user accounts keep working when an IP address is blocked. Hopefully they'll be able to code in something like that soon :) Shell babelfish 15:36, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Previous blocking problem
This is very irritating!!!!! I am a regular contributor and adminsitartor on the Afrikaans wikipedia. I need access to article source to add interwiki links and for translation purposes. I have no other interest in the English wikipedia and have never been involved in any vandalism. Laurens-af 09:25, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
- There is no block on this account, and I see no sign that there ever has been one. That says to me that the most likely cause is colateral damage from a block of the underlying IP. I would need to know that IP in order to get the block cleared for you. I think, from the one time I got hit by a similar situation, that the block message you get when you try to edit should tell you the IP that is showing up as blocked. Post that IP here, and I'll look into why it was blocked. If it's a shared IP, as appears likely, then we can get the block removed, and get a notice on the IP that it is shared. - TexasAndroid 19:23, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

- Yes - it does seem to relate to the IP number - today the IP-Number is 168.209.98.35. This is the IP number that is assigned to me when I dial up. I have no control over what the ISP assigns to me. Surely having a ligtimate username should override an IP-Number block? Laurens-af 11:16, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

- I am still blocked - why?????????????? The message says Your IP address is 168.209.98.35. Please include this address, along with your username (if you are a registered user), in any queries you make. Please fix - it is very disabling not having access to English source code!!!

- If you check out User_talk:168.209.98.35, you'll see that the IP is listed as a Zombie proxy. This generally means a virus compromised computer that is able to be used by anyone who wants to use it to do any action on the net, hiding behind the zombie. And we do not allow zombies to edit, because there is no way of knowing who is actually making the edit. In this specific case, the IP was used by the Squidward vandal, a rapid edit vandal who uses multiple zombie and open proxies to make his attacks.
- None of this means you are a vandal. What it does mean is that the computer you are editing from, whether your home PC or a school/library one, is or was a zombie. Compromised by a virus or trojan. And it will not be able to be unblocked until it is no longer compromised.
- If you think that the computer has been cleaned up, you'll need to talk to User:Hall Monitor, who originally blocked the IP. (Use Email.) I don't have the expertise myself to verify zombie proxies. - TexasAndroid 14:56, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

- Yes this is all fine - someone did probably use this IP number for vandelism pusposes - but it is dynamically allocated by the ISP - therefore blocking the IP has absolutely no benefit. What I need is to be able to make edits while being logged in as a registered user with a valid user name, a small trackrecord and a valid e-mail address. I don't understand why a named user is blocked based on an IP number - surely the user name should override any IP-number problems? Laurens-af 21:21, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
