Leland Blaine Chapman (born December 14, 1976 in Groom, Texas, USA) is a Hawaii bail bondsman, athlete and the third son of Duane "Dog" Chapman and the younger brother of Duane Lee Chapman II.
[edit] History
When Leland was younger he did not spend much time with his father. He still remembers the time when he could no longer say "hey" or "hey you" to get his dads attention. He had to say "dad". As a child, Leland would go on many bounties with his father, and remembers going as a paperboy. Leland use to cry whenever Dog arrested the criminal, "They were being taken to jail and I felt sorry for them". As a teenager, Leland was in a Denver, Colorado gang. He still remembers how Dog would come to school with him to make sure that Leland went. No one would want to hang out with Leland because they thought that Dog was spying on them. He spent four years in a youth detention facility, otherwise known as a reform school. He still recalls times when he has ran away. Leland was about 18 when he had his first son, Dakota. At the time, Leland was working at K-Mart doing his best to make ends meet. He considers his father, his son Dakota, and "the spirit of Hawaii" as the three major influences that made him go straight. At 21, Leland started a Da Kine Bail Bonds branch in Kona, Hawaii. Leland and his ex-wife Maui divorced in April 2005, but remain close friends.
Leland has a second son, Cobie, and shares a close relationship with both of his parents,[citation needed] appearing often in his father's reality show Dog the Bounty Hunter, along with Dog and the other members of his crew. He divides his time between his bail bonds business and professionally competing in boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts and Extreme Boxing.
On May 19, 2006, his half-sister, Barbara Chapman, was killed in a car crash the day of their father's island wedding. [1]'
[edit] Arrest
On September 14, 2006, Leland Chapman, along with his father Duane "Dog" Chapman and bounty hunting partner Tim Chapman, were arrested in Hawaii on 2003 Mexican charges concerning their involvement in the arrest of fugitive Max Factor heir Andrew Luster. The charges were illegal detention and conspiracy in an alleged kidnapping in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco State, Mexico. They were held overnight in Federal custody and were released on September 15 on bond pending extradition proceedings.[1] If extradited by the U.S. and convicted in Mexico, they could be sentenced up to six years in a Mexican jail.
On September 15, 2006, Leland was released (with the others) on $100,000 bail. He has been ordered to stay in his house except when working and he must wear an electronic tracking device. He was also ordered to give up his passport. An extradition hearing was set for December 22, 2006.
A court hearing was held on December 22, 2006. The original hearing was postponed because a report from a lower court was not yet received. The court heard both sides of the story, and then decided to recess and continue the hearing on January 16, 2007.The court has up to Tuesday February 6, 2007 but it was extended.
They are facing sentences of up to 4 years in Mexican prison.
