Liam Devaney
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Liam Devaney is a former Irish sportsperson who played hurling with Tipperary in the 1960s.
Liam Devaney is regarded as the most versatile player ever to play for the Tipperary senior hurlers. Whererever Tipperary were in trouble on the field, Devaney was very quickly deployed with devastating effect, even taking up the goalkeeper's role when needed, an unusual placement for one of the games most famous forwards. A member of the Borris-Ileigh club in North tipperary, he won his first Munster Championship medal in 1960. It was to be the first of three such provincial victories in-a-row. Subsequently he also claimed back-to-back All-Ireland medals in 1961 and 1962. Devaney missed the next two championship seasons, however, he returned with Tipp in 1965 to win his fourth Munster medal and his third All-Ireland winners medal. He claimed his final two Munster medals in 1967 and 1968, however, further All-Ireland glory was to elude him.
