Linucon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Linucon is a combination Linux Expo/Science Fiction convention. It was started in order to replace the Atlanta Linux Showcase, after the latter's demise in 2001. It can be viewed both as a science fiction convention where it's easy to check your e-mail and as a technical conference where you can buy Pocky while dressed as an elf.
The science fiction side has three main tracks this year: an anime track, a literary track, and a gaming track. These tracks will include Cosplay (and a Masquerade), filk (which is similar to "Acapella Karaoke, often original"), a dealer's room, panels, author readings and signings, Birds of a Feather sessions, and an art show. The convention suite will have caffeinated Jello and ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. There will be a live action role playing game (LARP). The video room will be playing around the clock. Both gaming rooms (computer and paper) will also be open 24 hours.
The technical side ranges over such subjects as Linux kernel architecture, security and network administration, web design, use of Linux on a laptop, computer gaming, digital art, electronic publishing, and machinima. Free wireless internet access will be available. There will be panels, tutorials, an "installfest" and featured guests who will go head to head in a first person shooter elimination tournament (the "celebrity fragfest").
[edit] Aftermath
Since the primary founder of Linucon, Rob Landley has moved from Austin, Linucon has unfortunately met the same demise as the Atlanta Linux Showcase.
