I am curious about the criteria of inclusion in this list (the Jewish part). Obviously the list is not based on religion. Some people listed here were atheists, some Christians. What are the rules of inclusion? --Gene s 12:03, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

This page does not seem appropriate. What does winning a prize have to do with choosing/being a particular religion? The two are not related. What about Noble prize winners that were married or smoked? It seems silly and inconsequential. We have a list of Nobel Prize winners already, why include an 'AND' list (Jewish AND winner). I would support that. I don't think it's even possible to clearly define someone's religion. What if he converted? What if he denounced his faith? Besides, we don't have any lists of people by religion - List of Buddist Nobel Prize winners? List of Atheist Nobel Prize winners? --Gene s 07:27, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Note: This vote is a waste of time as this list is part of a series relating to List of Jews. It has nothing to do with "religion" as such, it is more about people who were ethnically Jewish, see [1] for a similar project on the web. See article on Jew in this regard. The page List of Jewish Nobel Prize winners was originally part of List of Jews. And because, that page had become too long, it was necessary to create this new "Nobel" list, just as new "Lists of Jews" were created for other subjects: List of Jewish scientists and philosophers; List of Jewish superheroes; List of Jews by country; List of rabbis; List of Jewish Biblical figures; List of Israeli politicians. I vote deletion too. Note however that:

• This page was (I think) created as an offshoot of the List of Jews page, so somebody will probably return it there if it's deleted.
• The criterion used is Jewish ethnicity, not religion (though it should differentiate between people of part and full ethnicity).
• I agree defining religion is difficult, but not particularly more so than nationality or sexual orientation (for particularly problematic examples look

at List of Czechs or List of Russians).

• Some people might think that it is consequential that 20% of Nobel Prize winners were of Jewish ethnicity. However, without a reasoned article explaining why it's consequential the list could do more harm than good. Udzu 09:43, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)

PS Note also that this is far from the only 'AND' list on Wikipedia. Just for composers, we have List of female composers, List of famous gay, lesbian or bisexual composers, List of composers of African descent, List of Dutch and Flemish composers, List of Indian composers, List of Indonesian composers, List of Italian composers and List of Polish composers. There's even a List of Christian scientists and a Category:Scientists by nationality. Udzu

This ought to be updated, as the 2005 Literature winner (Harold Pinter) is Jewish.

This is an interesting list. I've just finished reading another collection of laureate Feynman's letters and one springs to mind relating to a similar list that was published during his lifetime. He wrote several letters to the list's author specifically requesting that his name be removed from the list of Jewish laureates, as he felt himself not to be a practising Jew and the entire notion to be absurd. "Don't You Have Time To Think?", Feynman P, 2005.

This whole list--especially the howler" Jews with one Jewish grandparent"-- is like a caricature of the ghetto mentality imupugned to some close-minded and xenophobic Jews, the obsession with seeing themselves as being apart, better, superior. I suspect it was created by a rabid anti-semite or maybe an unconscious anti-semite (like a zionist).

[edit] Nadine Gordimer's Mother Was Jewish

Contrary to what the list currently states, both of Nadine Gordimer's parents were Jewish. On page 33 of "No Cold Kitchen: A Biography of Nadine Gordimer," Ronald Suresh Roberts writes "Gordimer's mother was named Nan (her real name was Hannah, née Myers). Her father went by Isidore Gordimer... Isidore and Nan were both products of the large Jewish migration to South Africa in the last decades of the nineteenth century (he from the Eastern European Pale, she from London)." Much of Roberts' chapter entitled "Wellsprings: Ancestry" deals with the Jewish background of both sides of Nadine Gordimer's family. She and her sister did attend a Catholic parochial school, where "Nadine and Betty were the only Jews" (Roberts, page 47), but she was not "raised a Christian," as the Wikipedia article on her erroneously informs us.
