[edit] Citations needed

Λυδαcιτγ 02:10, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

DMC | "Find My Way" (album) | "I ain't no punk. I got a pump in the trunk, but I don't talk junk." | This occurs after the words "confuscious states" in the first verse. |
Λυδαcιτγ 02:10, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Change the Channel"
Rogue Traders | "Change the Channel" | "Would somebody please kill that fucking frog." | Reversal of undeciperable gibberish at end of song.[1] |

Cited at the lyrics site. Λυδαcιτγ 05:14, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Now is Forever"
Eiffel 65 | "Now is Forever" (album) | "Going on from minute to minute" / "Yet to come's all that's gone" | The first two messages are heard during the first and second verses of the song[3] and seem to be logical continuations of the lyrics. |
Was apparently cited at the above link, which now redirects (anyway, lyrics sites are copyvio). -Audacity 05:14, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Beautiful Death"
Wintersun | "Beautiful Death" (album) | "Only way out is through window of dreams." | In the quiet part, fairly audiable after the spoken "Nothing could have prepared me for this" |
Mentioned at a bunch of lyrics sites. Λυδαcιτγ 18:39, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Passion" and "Sanctuary"
Utada Hikaru | "Passion" and Sanctuary" | "I need more affection than you know", "So many ups and downs", "I need true emotions." | The first phrase is repeated backwards. The others are sang backwards alternating with forward lyrics during the middle of the song. This was done intentionally, as it was written for the PlayStation 2 video game Kingdom Hearts II, which features themes of reversal. |
Referenced here; discussed in many forums; but I can't find a good source that actually details the backwards messages. Λυδαcιτγ 18:39, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Freezing Vertigo"
Trent Reznor | "Freezing Vertigo" (Quake soundtrack) | "...much too long and talk too much and we seem to get nowhere...", "...to live to die [...] and never try..." | The words are hard to make out because of the many other overlayed tracks of whispering and ambient noise, but the reversal is definitely deliberate. |
Sound real. Λυδαcιτγ 18:19, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "No Surrender 2005"
TNA Wrestling | "No Surrender 2005" | "Rhino is here. More are coming to TNA. TNA is coming to Spike TV. Someone will get Gored tonight. Vince fears Jeff Jarrett." | Forwards: Indistinguishable, though it is supposed to be part of a choral backing track. |
You can hear it at ytmnd (tnawrestlingsubliminalmessage) - but I don't think ytmnd is a reliable source. Λυδαcιτγ 18:19, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Jesusland"
Ben Folds | "Jesusland" (album) | "...laaaand." | Heard at the very beginning of the song before piano begins. The backward choral introduction is, in fact, the "land" in "Jesusland," as sung in the choruses, isolated and played backwards. |
Sounds plausible. Λυδαcιτγ 01:34, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Fire Coming Out Of A Monkeys Head"

(Henningklevjer 17:55, 8 June 2006 (UTC))
[edit] "Hung Up"
Madonna | "Hung Up" | "You're so sad, I'm so Mashed" | The part that goes: "Time goes by, So slowly" in reverse (I checked) says I'm so mashed (stoned) you're so sad. I just want someone to add it, since it looks confusing to add to the list |
(Henningklevjer 17:55, 8 June 2006 (UTC))
[edit] "Mother"
Pink Floyd | "Mother" | at the beggining of the track when the lyrics "They'll Drop the Bomb" is heard. by reversing it you can hear "I Love Satan" |

[edit] "This City Never Sleeps"
Eurythmics | "This City Never Sleeps" (album) | "I enjoyed making the record, very good, very good" | At the end of the song |
//aktalo() 18:59, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Gotta Find a Way"
Bloodrock | "Gotta Find a Way" | "Anyone who is stupid enough to play this record backwards deserves what he is about to hear," followed by excerpts from Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky. | Possibly the earliest parody of backwards messages. |
The earliness makes this very important. This comment here seems to validate it: "Has anyone ever listened to the backward masking portion of "Gotta Find a Way" backwards and know what it says? It's the third earliest example of backwards masking I know of, preceded only by The Mothers of Invention "Hot Poop" and The Beatles "Revolution #9"." Λυδαcιτγ 04:22, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "When Heaven Burns"
Deicide | "When Heaven Burns" (album) | "Doing it all for my love of satan" | The indecipherable gibberish in the beginning of the song reversed reveals that message. |
Sounds real. Λυδαcιτγ 01:22, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Venus (In Our Blood)"
HIM | "Venus (In Our Blood)" (album) | "Where are we going, Daddy?" | In the voice of a little girl. Accompanied by creepy Jack-In-The-Box type music and tubular bells. |
Accepted in forums such as this one. Λυδαcιτγ 05:31, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "December is for Cynics"
The Matches | "December is for Cynics" (album) | "E. Von Dahl Killed The Locals" | Forwards: "Slacol eht dellik lhad nov e." A reference to the Beatles' "Paul is Dead" urban legend. |
Detailed here. Λυδαcιτγ 03:45, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Guitarras De Amor"
P.O.D. | "Guitarras De Amor" (album) | "Love is beautiful, love is kind, love is patient, love is blind, love, is, love is beautiful, yes..." | The entire song is a backmasked poem based on 1 Corinthians 13:4 |
Talked about here. Λυδαcιτγ 03:04, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Enjoy the Silence"
Lacuna Coil | "Enjoy the Silence" (album) | "All I ever wanted, all I ever needed, is here in my arms, words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm" | Chorus is repeated backwards during interlude after the first chorus. |
Sounds real. Λυδαcιτγ 11:08, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "There Will Be No Armageddon"
Union Jack | "There Will Be No Armageddon" | "Invisible", "the most powerful", "the futures of yesterday are disposable today", "technology is [?]" | The passage starts at about 5:15 with a length of about 30 seconds. Only fragments can be made out clearly since the voice is echoing. Furthermore, the volume of the background music and the voice is changing. |
Sounds real. Λυδαcιτγ 23:02, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
- How should I verify this one? I couldn't find one single citation about that message, although it is clearly audible. It's a stupid thing to wait for someone else to make the first step. - Jack's Revenge 01:07, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Anti-Satan Song For Mom"
Victim's Family | "Anti-Satan Song For Mom" | "I hope you break your needle, Tipper! You cow!" | This is spoken backwards at the end of the song. It's obviously a reference to Tipper Gore. |
Sounds real. Λυδαcιτγ 23:02, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Avoid the Light"
Pantera | "Avoid the Light" (album) | "Satan's wrath is the only choice. His stillborn army is impeccable." | During the intro and outro. |
Given as an example here; also came up at sing365 (an illegal lyrics site). Λυδαcιτγ 01:35, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Pharao"
Tarot | "Pharao" (album) | "Arvasin, että kuuntelet tämän takaperin, perverssi!" | "I knew that you would listen to this backwards, you pervert!" |
Seems to be described here. Λυδαcιτγ 04:50, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Taste the Pain"
Red Hot Chili Peppers | "Taste the Pain" (album) | Chorus reversed | Sung at the beginning of the song |
Noted here. Λυδαcιτγ 23:00, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Mic Commander"
Mindless Self Indulgence | "Mic Commander" | "Masturbating, Defacating." / "These eyes, they look outside" | Clearly audible reversed speach by Little Jimmy Urine; the first can be heard three times throughout the song, and the second can be heard once roughly in the middle of the song. |
Shown in (copyvio) lyric sites like this one. Λυδαcιτγ
[edit] "Deadwing"
Porcupine Tree | "Shallow" (album) | "Afterwards, uh... I guess I'll just...?" | At about 2:57 (backwards time) |
I was listening to the Porcupine Tree album "Deadwing" the other day and I heard some deliberately reversed vocals in the song "Shallow". I reversed it in Sound Studio, but I can't exactly make out what he's saying... "Afterwards, uh... I guess I'll just...?" It's at about 2:57 (backwards time). Can anybody confirm / find a citation for this? Zackarotto 22:27, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Find the Answer Within"
Boo Radleys | "Find the Answer Within" from the album (album) | "If you like a lot of fun (it could be saying fight, I really couldn't get it any clearer), join our fan club." The other said, "Have you seen the little doggies, doing doggy style?" | You can hear these both repeated from about 0:15 to 1:15 when reversed. |
At the end of the Boo Radleys song "Find the Answer Within" from the album Wake Up!, one or two messages are deliberately inserted backwards (no lyrics at the end of the song make it really easy to notice). One said, "If you like a lot of fun (it could be saying fight, I really couldn't get it any clearer), join our fan club." The other said, "Have you seen the little doggies, doing doggy style?" You can hear these both repeated from about 0:15 to 1:15 when reversed. I just haven't been able to find any sources supporting it, other than just reversing the song and listening, though. Can anyone back me up with a source on this? Torpov 04:20, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

- I doubt it. Most of these messages are probably made up. TheJabberwock 01:38, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Those messages are a load of bull sh!t. How do you get viva Satan out of everybody? The "eve" part could get viva, but where does Satan come from? 66.110.233.200 20:51, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] The Beatles
"Rain", "Revolution 9", and "Free As a Bird" are the 3 Beatles songs with uncontested backwards speech. In the case of "Rain", there are too many sources to list: The Beatles Anthology p. 212-214; Lewisohn's Beatles Recording Sessions book, Big Secrets by William Poundstone, etc. St. Jimmy 16:00, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Please Verify
I have found, someone please verify, as I have not found these anywhere else on the internet.
Artist | Source | Message | Comments |
---|---|---|---|
Gorillaz | "Fire Comming Out Of A Monkeys Head" | "He is dignified, he is smart." | Reversal of "Oh...little town U.S.A...." |
Julez Santana | "There It Go(The Whistle Song)" | "I am a real nigga." | Reversal of "Booty Booty Booty Rockin Everywhere" at 1:00 |
i have found that if you play a song fast forward you can hear subliminal message. for example play shania twain "man i feel like a woman" fast forwards.
[edit] Idea
Alot of these seem false. Maybe we should have links to wavs of these parts of the songs with the 'message' next to them for accuracy. Keaton 9:58pm EST. 5/28/06
- Better, and easier, find citations for all the ones at "deliberate backmasking." You're definitely right that a lot sound false. I'll get to it when I have time. Λυδαcιτγ(TheJabberwock) 04:47, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

- Again, you need a citation. Λυδαcιτγ 21:40, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
I found a subliminal message in the Pink Floyd song "Mother". It is at the beggining of the track when the lyrics "They'll Drop the Bomb" is heard. by reversing it you can hear "I Love Satan"Ted 05:46, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Psycho Killer
In "Psycho Killer" The lyrics are actually French for "What is it?" A phrase used in many of their songs. I'm going to add that this is just alleged. --216.37.227.92 00:40, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
- oops, it already is--216.37.227.92 00:42, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Sources of reverse speech
There are two different examples of reverse speech: reverse vocal tracks (mostly included in "Deliberate backmasking") and phonetic reversals. While reverse vocal tracks are by definition intentional, phonetic reversals can be coincidental, intentional, or possibly the work of a preternatural or subconscious intelligence. More information on phonetic reversals can be found here: [3]
The most used links are to Reverse Speech [4], the Backmask Online page [5] and bulletin board [6], and Doctor Lev's Paul Is Dead website [7]. Also, you can sign up for a free membership to Reversing Machines [8], where some examples are on the BB's, and both it and Reverse Speech are the domain of David John Oates.
The longer a phonetic reversal is, the less likely that it is coincidence, but at the same time the more difficult and thus less likely it becomes to be intentional. This is a seeming paradox that points toward likely subconscious or preternatural origin for lengthy examples. That is not to say that there couldn't be some that are intentional. Let's not forget what Aleister Crowley advised in his use of reverse memory work for magical purposes: [9]
First Method. Let the Exempt Adept first train himself to think backwards by external means, as set forth here following.
("a") Let him learn to write backwards, with either hand.
("b") Let him learn to walk backwards.
("c") Let him constantly watch, if convenient, cinematograph films, and listen to phonograph records, reversed, and let him so accustom himself to these that they appear natural, and appreciable as a whole.
("d") Let him practise speaking backwards; thus for "I am He" let him say, "Eh ma I".
("e") Let him learn to read backwards. In this it is difficult to avoid cheating one's self, as an expert reader sees a sentence at a glance. Let his disciple read aloud to him backwards, slowly at first, then more quickly.
("f") Of his own ingenium, let him devise other methods. Heff01 02:16, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Clips of backmasked messages
Would it be breaking the copyright laws to have a 5 second clip of a song forwards, and then one to show the backmasked message? If it isnt then we should put up the messages for each song, to verify if they are indeed there. Bearingbreaker92 13:54, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- Interesting point. I'd say it's probably not copyvio, since, for example, http://jeffmilner.com/backmasking.htm has longer clips than that. On the other hand, I learned recently that posting full lyrics to a song is actually illegal, despite the proliferation of sites that do this. See [10] and [11]. But if we're allowed to put up 30-second forwards samples, I don't see why we wouldn't be allowed to put up 5-second backwards samples. Λυδαcιτγ 03:28, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- Then I'll start working on getting a few up. Audacity, could you give me a quick tutorial on how to put media on this site? Ive also found a site that has alot of the backmasked messages we need. Ill google it and put it up later. http://www.wootang.net/backmask/ Thats the site i was talking about, i reccommend checking it out.

[edit] What counts
Does it count if random words or phrases apper in a song when it is played backwards eg. in 2-0-5 by JibJab "I brought missouri" can be heard near the end. (I don't know much about US politics, did Bush aledgely buy missouri.)-- Dr B
- If the words are there by coincidence, then no, it's not backmasking. As for Missouri, it became a state in 1821. Λυδαcιτγ 21:05, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
I found that if you play black eyed peas "pump it" it will say "listen to me. ahhh listen to me ahhh boylishis
- The short answer to "what counts" is anything where there are reliable secondary sources which detail the supposed backmnasking. Anything which is not backed by reliable secondary sources may be removed as original research. Just zis Guy you know? 08:18, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dangerously in Love
Does anyone know the one on a song on Dangerously in Love, by Beyoncé. I don't have it anymore (I bought it by download and have lost the licence) but I remember there definitly was one somewhere. It had something to do with starsigns I think. - Рэдхот 18:21, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

- Well, I finally found and listened through it and couldn't hear much of anything. I heard something vaguely close to 'Libra', but I don't think it was meant to be it, just coincidental. Any idea what portion of the song it was supposed to be in? - Indy Gold 20:23, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fugees?
I don't think this should be on the list. Reversing is a common technique to censor any swearing, and if we list The Fugees, surely we'd have to list countless other songs? Demonofthefall 10:34, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
- Well... Judging from the Everything2 citation, this song is an especially notable example of the backmasking censorship technique. Perhaps we should just keep it in here as the single best example of this use of backmasking? Λυδαcιτγ 00:42, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
-
- I agree with Demonofthefall, I was going to add the same comment myself when I saw this. I think most people are going to notice that Fugees entry as well and think it's out of place here, on a list about backmasked messages. If it was the first record to use backmasking to censor swearing then it would be significant, but if not there's nothing special about the album. I'm only passing so I'm not that bothered, apart from that it's a good list so I thought it was worth mentioning. Croxley 20:40, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
OK, I'll just take it out and put it into Backmasking. Λυδαcιτγ 20:28, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] The Beautiful People
I remeber hearing somewhere that there's a message if you play Marilyn Manson's "The Beautifil People" backwards. I'll try to find my source, can someone check the song for me? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Narcotics faerie (talk • contribs) 17:48, 16 December 2006 (UTC).
- Well, I couldn't find anything, but the riff sounds the same backwards. Heroicraptor 07:17, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] The Boo Radleys
[edit] Tupac Shakur
Why is tupac not listed on this pacs life album: song: pac's life, backmasked message: "you should see me ill be back" better dayz album: song: this life i lead, backmasked message "yes im alive and be missing you" -- Supreme euphanasia 17:41, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Done -- Supreme euphanasia 17:40, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the time to add these, but I don't think they're real messages. I did kind of hear them when listening to the song, but I don't believe that if Tupac wanted to send a message out, he would do it in such a hard-to-hear way. Also, YouTube is not an especially reliable source. You may wish to read backmasking to understand the difference between deliberate backmasking and accidental phonetic reversal, which is what I believe this is. Λυδαcιτγ 02:31, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
man how can u say that it accidental phonetic reversal, i could hear both messages pretty well and espiescially "you should see me i'll be back" and i believe this is reliable as i have also personally used audacity to reverse both songs and i have heard the message pretty clearly and if u were to say they werent clear then i mite as well start removing 50 percent of the songs list on backmasked messages cause i have heard some of these and it was so faint that i didnt even know how someone could consider that as a backmasked message. so if lets just start invisitgating into the rest of the songs on here cause im sure sum of them arent as accurate as they claim to be. i think the tupac shakur is fine and should be left where it is thanx :) -- Supreme euphanasia 04:45, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've heard quite a few backmasked messages, and the difference between the intentional and the accidental ones is clear. The intentional messages are gibberish when played forwards, and translate to a clear voice when heard backwards. The accidental ones are spoken words when played forwards, and hard to understand when played backwards (not impossible, but hard, especially if don't know what you're looking for). The Tupac one is in the latter category.
- Now, you are claiming that some of the others on the list are also hard to hear. Please point them out, as they should definitely be removed. Λυδαcιτγ 05:12, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
the eminem one where he says im eminem that i could even make that out that was not clear, the tupac backmasked message is delbirate back mask as it has been done on other tupac albums. An example of backmasking used as censorship is on the album, "Better Dayz" by 2pac, where all profanity, drug references, violence, and even names of certain rappers are backmasked. and also u can hear it pretty clear please do not change this fact due to ur own personal opnion! there was even audio of this on the official tupaccontests website! -- Supreme euphanasia 06:49, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

- In terms of the censorship, that's interesting, and if you have a good citation for it you might want to add it to backmasking (it's not really a backmased message, though).
- I have not heard the Eminem one, but Songfacts is usually pretty reliable. However, I'm going to hopefully upload samples of these all at some point, so I'll be able to listen to it then.
- If you can find a good source for the messages you just added, I'll accept them. YouTube is not a good source; I've seen videos on there accusing everyone from Britney Spears to Rush of backmasking. I won't violate the 3RR. If you insist on keeping the message in the article, I'll ask for a Wikipedia:Third opinion. Λυδαcιτγ 20:07, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
there was an whole article in backmasked messages it was like this:
Backmasking as censorship
Backmasking is often used to censor words and phrases deemed as inappropriate on radio edits and edited album releases.[citation needed] This practice is most often applied in rap music. One particularly common example involves the word "shit" being backmasked to sound like "ish". As a result, "ish" has become a euphemism for "shit". An example of backmasking used as censorship is on the album, "Better Dayz" by 2pac, where all profanity, drug references, violence, and even names of certain rappers are backmasked.
but it was removed i dont know? who removed it? -- Supreme euphanasia 16:42, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- Probably me. The article was backmasking, and I recently went through and deleted everything I couldn't find a good citation for.
- I've asked for a third opinion about the Tupac messages. Λυδαcιτγ 21:56, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- You asked for a third opinion about Youtube as a citation. I would say that it is o.k. if you can verify that the video is a real one, not a fake one. However, with 2Pac, you should easily be able to find source that is more reliable then Youtube. Look for a website that doesn't have users and the videos that are uploaded by an admin. Questions? Wikihermit(Talk) (Contributions) 03:25, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunatly the discovery of these backmasked messages in the tupac songs is relativy new for the pacs life song the videos are not fake as they were uploaded by me after using audacity to revrse the song then uploaded to youtube. u can try for urself to if ud like. i think this should be able to veriy the video and as you said the youtube citation is ok if i can veriyfi and i have. i guess that settles it thanx :) -- Supreme euphanasia 07:16, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- Since you uploaded the YouTube video yourself, using it as a citation is original research on your part, and clearly not allowed. Wikihermit, I believe that the video is real, but I don't hear a clear message in it; instead there's only the vaguely speech-like half-gibberish that comes from reversing true typical forward speech. Λυδαcιτγ 18:17, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
(Third opinion) WP:NOR prohibits us from reviewing "raw" evidence and drawing our own conclusion, at least when it comes to Wikipedia. You must cite a reliable source that reports on the backmasked mesages if you wish to include the claims here. Vassyana 20:43, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
ok wait im sure i found another videos of the tupac backmasked messages which not uploaded by me which then means it is not orginal research which then means it is ok :) thanx ill be adding the cits soon -- Supreme euphanasia 21:49, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
and why did u say Wikihermit whats that? -- Supreme euphanasia 21:51, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- User:Wikihermit. As Vassyana points out, even a video by someone else might is not acceptable, unless a reliable source (not just any YouTube user) produced the video and described the "message" in it. Λυδαcιτγ 23:05, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

- Find text of the message from a reliable source. That way it is not a matter of hearing the "message." If you think you have found a message in a video, then that would be original research. Please read WP:NOR. Wikipedia does not allow original research. Wǐkǐhérṃǐť(Talk) (Contributions) 01:42, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
ok give me a few days ill get back to u -- Supreme euphanasia 23:33, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Just checking in. How's it going with the citations? Wǐkǐɧérṃǐť(Talk) (Contributions) 18:54, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
