[edit] History
Red Arrow route 507 was first introduced on the 7 September 1968 as part of a network of flat fare bus routes aimed at commuters in Central London linking some of the capitals main Railway termini. The 507 is one of two Red Arrow routes, the other being route 521, to survive.
The Bus Reshaping Plan of the 1960s saw a replacement of London's bus routes with new short distance flat fare routes, operated by one person operated single deckers. The Central London Red Arrow services were the main outcome of this plan. The original Red Arrow route started on 18 April 1966 with the 500, running between Victoria and Marble Arch, extended during shopping hours to Oxford Circus. A little over 2 years later, 7 further routes were intoduced.
[edit] Red Arrow Network (as of 1972):
- 500 Victoria Stn - Park Lane - Oxford Street - Marble Arch - Park Lane - Victoria Stn
- 501 Waterloo Stn - Aldwych - Holborn - St Pauls - Bank - London Bridge Stn
- 502 Waterloo Stn - Aldwych - Fleet Street - St Pauls - London Wall - Liverpool Street Stn
- 503 Waterloo Stn - Westminster Bridge - Victoria Stn
- 505 Waterloo Stn - Aldwych - Holborn - Old Street - Shoreditch Church
- 506 Victoria Stn - Green Park - Piccadilly Circus
- 507 Waterloo Stn - Lambeth Bridge - Victoria Stn
- 513 Waterloo Stn - Aldwych - Fleet Street - St Pauls - Cannon Street - London Bridge Stn
The network saw much change over subsequent years, with the 507 being the last survivor of these early routes. By 1999 only four routes remained 501, 505, 507 and 521, with the 505 being withdrawn in 2000 and the 501 being withdrawn in 2002. The other Red Arrow routes did not provide any unique features and have been absorbed by other routes.
Routes 507 and 521 were the first London Bus Routes to be converted to articulated, or bendy, buses on 2 June 2002, from the ageing Leyland National single deckers. Being commuter routes, and so little used outside peak times, these routes were suitible to test the bendy buses on, rather than a major trunk route.
During late 2003, early 2004, a series of onboard fires on newly delivered Mercedes-Benz Citaros led to withdrawal of the entire fleet, while Mercedes-Benz made some modifications. During this period limited services operated using a variety of different buses on route 507 and 521. [1]
The RA garage code was first introduced when the Red Arrow buses were based at Walworth garage before Waterloo Garage was opened in 1981. There were fears that the artics would not be able to use the cramped Waterloo site, and ironically Camberwell, just across the road from Walworth, was considered for a time. However, these problems were resolved in time for operation to start at Waterloo. An evening service was introduced in April 2007.
