Madurai Tamil
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Madurai Tamil is the dialect which is spoken in the city of Madurai, as well as over a vast geographical area of South Tamil Nadu, the area once ruled by the Pandiya Kings (of the triumvirite kings of ancient Tamilnadu, namely, Chera, Chola and Pandiya). It differs substantially from Tirunelveli and Nagarkoil Tamil (these two regions were also a part of the Pandiya domain). The general romantic notion about the purity of Madurai Tamil and its closeness to classical Tamil could be ascibed to the to city having sponsored the Tamil Sangam -- the ancient equivalent of a language congress-- during the days of the Pandiya Kings. Some major cities that speak Madurai Tamil are: Madurai, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Teni and Rajapalayam. The common dialect has made the term Madurai refer to a much larger area than it actually is. It is not uncommon for people from any of the above cities to introduce themselves as people of Madurai.
