From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mason's Island (Algonquin: Chippachaug); an inhabited island in the mouth of the Mystic River (Connecticut), Connecticut USA, part of the town of Mystic, Connecticut. It is connected to the mainland by a causeway. The island is approximately 1.2 miles (2 km) in length North-South and 0.8 miles (1.2 km) in width East-West and is formed by solid granite bedrock. Most of the island is private, open only to residents and to members of the Mason's Island Yacht Club. A quarry supplying rough granite for breakwaters (e.g. at Newport, RI) was located on the western side of the island. Haynes records 1651: Connecticut granted Chippachaug (Mason's Island) to Major John Mason, who defeated the Pequots.
