[edit] Events
- On May 1, 1960 a U-2B Francis Gary Powers was shot down near Sverdlovsk in the USSR by a Soviet surface to surface air missile. This incident occurred just 2 days before President Eisenhower and Soviet chairman Nikita Khrushchev met at a summit conference in Paris. The US denied that they had planes spying on Russia. After the Russians had produced the captured pilot and parts of the plane, the US later admitted to the incident. Powers was released on February 10, 1962 with a prisoner exchange. In October of 1962, U-2 surveillance flights produced photographs of evidence of the installation of Soviet missiles in Cuba. The plane continued to fly until 1992, when a U-2 plane on its routine reconnaissance mission was reported lost over South Korea.
