Michelle A. McManus is a politician from the U.S. State of Michigan. She is the current assistant majority leader of the Michigan State Senate as of January 2007.
McManus of Lake Leelanau was first elected to the Michigan State Senate in November 2002, and was subsequently re-elected in November of 2006. She represents the 35th Michigan Senate District.

McManus as of her re-election in 2006 serves as the chair of the Senate Campaign & Election Oversight Committee. She also serves as the chair of the Department of Natural Resources Subcommittee and the Joint Capital Outlay Committee, Vice-Chair of the Community Colleges Subcommittee and a member of the Higher Education Subcommittee which are subcommittes of the Senate Appropriations Committee. She also Co-chairs on the Michigan Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus which seeks to promote the outdoors by educating about conservation.
[edit] Political Achievements
During her second year as a member of the Michigan State Senate she introduced Michigan Senate Bill No. 395. The bill known as the Legal Birth Definition Act would make partial birth abortion illegal in the state of Michigan. After the bill's veto at the hand of Governer Granholm, McManus joined with Right to Life of Michigan. Together they orchestrated a signature drive to overturn the veto. The veto was over turned with over five hundred thousand signatures.
McManus also defended the right of Michigan's wineries’ right of free enterprise. The wineries' had be threatened with the removal of their right to direct ship their wine to their customers. Thanks to her Michigan's wineries continue to grow as part of the Michigan agriculture.
As part of her involvement in the Michigan Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus she has sponsored bills the have created an apprentice hunting program. She also was involved with a ban on internet hunting, which is a remote controlled version of hunting where a person sitting at a computer somewhere aims a gun using their mouse[1].

She has lived for her entire life in the area of northern Michigan and attended Traverse City Public Schools. She graduated from Central Michigan University with her B.S. in Political Science.
McManus served as a State Representative to Michigan's 104th House District between 1992 and 1998.[2] In 1998, McManus ran for Congress against Rep. Bart Stupak in Michigan's First Congressional seat.[3] She served as the director of Governor John Engler's Northern Michigan Office between 1999 and 2002.[4]
She lives with her husband, Keith Nelson, and their two daughters in Lake Leelanau. Her oldest daughter, Jessica, is a sophomore at Ferris State University in the Public Administration program. She is an avid sportsman who enjoys many different outdoor and community activities.
