Mount Vaca is a 2,819 foot (859 meter) tall mountain in Northern California, located at (38° 24' N; 122° 6' W). The mountain is one of several in the San Francisco Bay Area that are high enough to be snowed upon. Others include Mount Saint Helena in Napa County, Loma Prieta in Santa Clara County, Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County, Mount Hernon in the Santa Cruz mountains, and Mount Hamilton near San Jose, California.
Vaca is the Spanish word for cow, and is attributed to early Spaniard colonizers in the area. The use of the word is common in the North Bay and is used in the names of the nearby city Vacaville and the surrounding Vaca Valley. Cows play an important part of the agricultural economy of this exurban bedroom area between San Francisco and Sacramento, which still has substantial farm and grazing lands. It is located in Napa and Solano Counties and is California's 53rd highest peak.
