Mount Vernon is a city in Rockcastle County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,592 at the 2000 census.

Mount Vernon is located at 37°22′1″N, 84°20′15″W (37.367018, -84.337409)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²). 8.2 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it (14.56%) is water.

The Rockcastle County newspaper is the Mount Vernon Signal, infamous for their continued use of typewriters to create stories.

Mount Vernon is the home to the historic Renfro Valley. Renfro Valley is very famous for the amazing Kentucky Music Hall of Fame museum. Aunt Polly's House is a small shop that has handscooped ice cream, purses, pictures, rugs, and much more. There is also a restaurant known as The Lodge. It is a wonderful dine-in restaurant with very tasty food.

While you're there, be sure to visit Renfro Valley Barn Dance, which is near The Lodge Restaurant and cabins. Heritage Inn and Suites is probably one of Renfro Valley's finest hotels, so be sure to make reservations.

WRVK is Rockcastle County's own local radio station on A.M. 1460. They keep you up-to-date on the latest weather, school announcements, contests, church announcements and more.

There are a total of 5 public K-5 schools, which include: Mt. Vernon Elementary, Brodhead Elementary, Roundstone Elementary, Rockcastle Co. Middle and Rockcastle Co. High school. Although it is not very large, Rockcastle Co. has many communities such as Orlando, Wildie and Burr. Jean's Restaurant is another one of Rockcastle's best dine-in country restaurants located in the Orlando area.

The current judge executive of the county is "Buzz" Carloftis, the prior judge executive was Roland Mullins.

The current mayor is Clarice Kirby.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 2,592 people, 1,126 households, and 681 families residing in the city. The population density was 314.7/km² (816.2/mi²). There were 1,241 housing units at an average density of 150.7/km² (390.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.46% White, 0.66% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.04% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.39% of the population.

There were 1,126 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% were non-families. 37.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $16,747, and the median income for a family was $23,105. Males had a median income of $24,286 versus $17,571 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,849. About 26.5% of families and 33.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.4% of those under age 18 and 26.8% of those age 65 or over.
