The MP 43 was known as the worlds first assault rifle and was developed in Germany during World War Two. Its development took place under the designation of MKb.42 (MachinenKarabine)in 1942. It was intended as a replacement for submachine guns, bolt action rifles and light machine guns, for front line troops. It had an effective range of around 600 meters.
[edit] History
The rifle was made secretly to avoid Hitler's opposition (Hitler wanted only SMGs to be manufactured). The final version appeared under the designation of MP 44 when Hitler finally approved it. The total number of MP 43's, MP 44's and StG 44's produced was around 500 000, these guns proved to be very effective.
[edit] Overall
By the modern standards, the StG 44 was too heavy, was not comfortable to fire from prone positions, and the butt attachment was not very strong and could be easily damaged in hand-to-hand combat. Overall it was more effective than SMG's. The MP 44/StG 44 was the first "assault rifle" made and proved to be a powerful weapon during the last days of WWII.
