Musavi is a patronymic, common among Iranian Shi'a Muslims, even though it is originally a Arabic name. The name implies that the person is a direct desendant to the seventh of the Shi'a twelver Imams: Musa al-Kazim ibn Jafar as Sadiq. Other tranliterations include Musawi, Mosavi, "Mousawi" (Arabic transliteration), "Mousavi" (Persian transliteration), or "Moussaoui (in the French transliteration) "Moosawi" (Bahraini translation)
