Nathaniel B. Smithers

Nathaniel Barratt Smithers (October 8, 1818 - January 16, 1896) was a United States Representative from Delaware. Born in Dover, he graduated from Lafayette College (Pennsylvania) in 1836, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Dover in 1840. He was secretary of state of Delaware from January 20 to November 23, 1863 and was elected as an Unconditional Unionist to the Thirty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William Temple; Smithers served from December 7, 1863 to March 4, 1865. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1864 to the Thirty-ninth Congress and resumed the practice of law in Dover. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1864 and in 1896 died in Dover. Interment was in the Old Methodist Cemetery.
