National Enrichment Facility
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
National Enrichment Facility (NEF) is a plant for the refinement of fuel for nuclear power plants by centrifuge. NEF is a subsidiary company of Louisiana Energy Services (LES) which is in turn owned by the Urenco Group. NEF is located in Hobbs, NM.
NEF employs a new type of license, the 10 CFR Part 2. It is a combination license granted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) allowing the plant to proceed directly from construction to operation. First of it's kind, this means NEF will be closely watched by many parties in the nuclear community.
The first group of operators has now successfully completed the Fundamentals section of training. The feedback on the classes is intended to streamline the flow of learning for subsequent operators.
The next step is systems training. This will include in-depth knowledge of the proprietary process methods developed by the Urenco Group.
One major step for the operators, which will affect the entire facility, is the choice between 8 or 12 hour shifts. The operators have much on their shoulders with this choice as they will be determining the quality of life for many people.
