National Marathon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wirefly National Marathon is an annual marathon foot-race held in Washington, D.C. It was established in 2006 with the aim of being held annually from then on. It is run by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance.
The 26.2 mile course starts and finishes at the RFK Stadium and the number of participants is limited to 5,000. The course for the first running of the race was in Washington, D.C. and Prince George's County, Maryland, but the course for the second running and planned future races will be entirely within the District of Columbia.
Included in the event is a half marathon race which follows the same route as the marathon for much of the race. In the 2007 running, due to a cone placement error, the half marathon course was .24 miles longer than the mapped and certified route.
Among the beneficiaries of the marathon are the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, the Special Olympics District of Columbia, United For D.C., Fort Dupont Ice Arena, the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation and the Black History Invitational Swim Meet.
In 2007, the National Marathon announced a sponsorship deal with Wirefly, an online cell phone retailer.
