Talk:Nature photography
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a very poor article, but that's probably because "nature photography" encompasses such a wide range of genres. With other genres broken out to the level of Aerial photography being separate from Strip aerial photography, or Portrait photography being distinct from Candid photography and Environmental portrait, it seems like at the very least landscape and wildlife photography should be separated.
These genres are approached with completely different technique and equipment; the only thing they really have in common is being taken outdoors.
I'm going to rearrange the article in a way that's more clear and straight-forward, in the hopes that a better starting point will attract more readers who will further improve the article. If anyone is mortified by my changes, you can always revert them.
[edit] Well Known Nature Photographers
I agree that the 'Well Known Nature Photographers' needs looking after. I suggest that a list is maintained on this page of possible additions to the list. Then, when the articles are written, they can be copied over to the main page. This is what I have seen removed from the page:
- John Brackenbury
- Clyde Butcher
- Ron Leonetti
- George Lepp
- Andy Rouse
- Florian Schulz
- John Shaw
- K.D. Swan
It's worth looking at the Photographers page (and talk page) for an example of where this has been done before. (Note that there isn't even an entry for nature/wildlife in the key!)
Of the list above, my personal opinion is that John Shaw is definitely a notable nature photographer, and Andy Rouse is definitely a notable wildlife photographer. Of the rest, I know little, I will be researching them all further. Vlad259 18:12, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- The experience we've had with with the List of Photographers list is that once started, many people want to add their names to the list. This puts the article's regular editors in the precarious position of either watching the list completely overwhelm the article or having to say no to a lot of people. The only fair means that has been proposed is to limit the list to people with Wiki articles as the determination of notability for articles is a fairly well-defined process. This same process is also in place for the List of fashion photographers article. The downside is that many people with start an article to claim notability and will fight tooth and nail over the AfD process. SteveHopson 20:08, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
