The Navy League of Canada, (or known in French as - La Ligue navale du Canada) is the non-governmental partner of the Canadian Department of National Defence that is responsible for the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets program. Since 1948, the Navy League of Canada has also been responsible for the Navy League Cadet programme for boys and girls between the ages of 9 to 12 years.

The Navy League of Canada was established in 1895 to promote an interest in Maritime Affairs generally throughout Canada. As a part of this mandate it launched our first youth program, the Boy's Naval Brigade, in 1917. The original goal of its youth program was to encourage young men to enter the Royal Canadian Navy or other seafaring careers. However the youth programs soon developed a much broader scope and evolved into modern Cadet programs with a focus on leadership and citizenship.

Today, The Navy League of Canada has a presence in over 230 Canadian communities. The youth programs benefit 15,000 young Canadians every year and continues to grow. The modern Navy League focuses on three key programmes: Navy League Cadets, Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and Maritime Affairs.

[edit] Navy League Cadets (for youth 9-12)

The Navy League Cadet Programme provides young Canadians the opportunity to develop important life-skills in a dynamic, challenging and fun learning environment. This nautically themed program prepares young Canadians to become active, responsible members of their communities by developing key values and skills.

Values - good citizenship, patriotism, self-discipline, healthy living, self-respect and respect for others
Skills - water-safety, first aid, communications, ropework, orienteering, leadership and teamwork
Activities - camping, sailing and boating, sports, drill, fancy ropework, trips
The training programme of the navy league cadets is conducted by Navy League officers, who are not members of the Canadian Forces.

[edit] Royal Canadian Sea Cadets (for youth 12-18)

The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Programme is an exciting program that provides opportunities and challenges relevant for today's youth.

Exciting - Adventure Training, boating & sailing, sports, regattas, ship visits
Opportunities - summer camps, national and international exchanges, develop life-long friendships, learn many new skills
Challenges - contribute to your community, accept responsibility, become a leader, always do your best
The training programme of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets is under the responsibility of the Department of National Defence, who must provide Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) officers to run the unit. CIC officers are officers of the Canadian Forces that work exclusively for the Canadian Cadet Movement.

The Navy League of Canada maintains an abiding interest in offshore industries, the condition of the marine environment and promoting the need for a modern and effective Navy. With the largest supply of fresh water in the world, the longest coastline of any nation and an ocean area almost equal to its landmass, the effective management of water-borne resources is critical to the health of Canada. The Navy League promotes these issues by:

Educating Canadians through the preparation, publication, and dissemination of information
Advocating for progressive maritime policies
Providing links between Canadian media and experts in maritime-related fields
Partnering with Canadian industries to advance the responsible utilization of maritime resources
