[edit] History
The route was originally signed as New York State Route 84. After Interstate 84 was built, it was reassigned the number 284.
In both states it has carried two different designations before its current one.

Sign along I-84 restricting trucks on NY 284.
Trucks using 284 (along with NY 17A and NY 94 between US 6 and the state line) are limited to 10 tons (9 tonnes) gross vehicular weight, to better protect the highways' status as key transport routes between I-84 and northwestern New Jersey.
