[edit] Route description
The western terminus of Route 301 is at a four-way junction with 9D in Cold Spring. At the intersection, Morris Avenue enters from the north, Chestnut Street comes in from the south, and Main Street enters from the west and leaves to the east. NY 301 follows Main east from the junction.
NY 301 and Main Street climb the one mile hill into Nelsonville, where the route remains Main Street as it continues back into the township of Philipstown. It crosses US 9, locally Albany Post Road, at Mekeel Corners and continues northeast into the woods of the Clarence Fahnestock State Park.
It skirts the southern bank of Lake Canopus before crossing the Taconic State Parkway. Three and one-half miles further northeast, NY 301 splits right, or to the southeast, from Farmers Mills Road to hug the western shore of Boyds Corner Reservoir and a mile later follows the inside of the western fork of the West Branch Reservoir before bi-secting the body of water via causeway and ending at NY 52, Glendale Avenue, in the county seat of Carmel.
The eastern terminus of NY 301 is just a quarter mile north from the eastern terminus of NY 52 at U.S. Route 6.
