New pop
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New Pop is the name given to a style of popular music which was briefly popular in the early 1980s.
Its main characteristics are a sense of ambition, a playfulness in mixing and matching different styles and an ironic sense of humour. In particular an awareness of the nature of the music business and its relationship to other facets of popular culture. While there was no one dominant style at play, a rejection of rockist attitudes was a key part of it, and embracing the use of new synthesiser technology.
Key records of the genre include Dare! by The Human League, The Lexicon of Love by ABC, Sulk by The Associates and much of the work on the ZTT record label.
