Nicola Zaccaria

Nicola Zaccaria (b. March 3, 1923) was a well-regarded operatic bass-baritone during the "golden age" of opera in the middle of the twentieth century. Born in Piraeus, Greece on 3 March 1923, Zaccaria studied in Athens where he enjoyed his debut in 1949. He sang at La Scala in 1953 and his position as a main-stay of the bass operatic repertoire was assured thereafter.
Bass singers are usually over-shadowed by the tenors and sopranos that typically take the lead roles in opera, and Zaccaria was no exception. He sang with the most famous singers of his generation - Maria Callas being the most obvious example - but never achieved fame in the eyes of the general public. He was perhaps most famous in the public's eye as the husband of the famous mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne.
