The recent edit by Rtr10 doesn't seem very encyclopedic and needs citations. I'm going to make some minor changes to it, but I think it may need a more in depth re-write. -tbooz

Some fool went and added "Nick Saban is a racist." So, I deleted it. cerebralshrike 11:50, 2 Feb 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. We've been getting lots of stuff like that lately. Realkyhick 19:21, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
They should have just said "Nick Saban uses racist terms when telling stories and then blames others for the words coming out of his mouth." But that isn't really encyclopedic, even though it is true. CodeCarpenter 21:58, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Some material that was previously on this page was copied verbatim from this web page. I've deleted it. Additionally, the horrible formatting of that particular segment of the material had earned it a cleanup tag. --Dachannien 16:51, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I have included an extensive biography taken largely from my own memory as an LSU student and season ticket holder during Saban's tenure. The only material that needs attribution are the sentiments of Nick Saban about leaving LSU, which he articulated in a June 2005 interview with Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com

acountis June 23, 2005

I have added the two sentances that reflected the controversy of Nick Saban while he was in Michigan State. This needed to be recorded becasue even today, Nick Saban regarded as rather distasteful coaching practices regarding job opportunity at LSU, but i toned it down a bit.

-BC July 29th, 2005

The career record in the side info box says 9-7. That is the current correct career record for Nick Saban's experience as a head coach in the NFL, however, it does not take into account his career record as a college level head coach. Both his career record as a college head coach and an NFL head coach should be shown in the info box. --Seancp 23:23, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

  • I added his college and NFL wins together, since they both qualify under a "career" record. Gonk 06:57, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Replace Jim Bates link with link to correct Jim Bates.

-- Tim F August 25, 2006

  • In the first paragraph it has this statement with reference #2 cited. "On January 3, 2007 Saban accepted the headcoaching position at Alabama."

I will not edit and hope the original poster can correct it. If Saban accepts the position, then I'll leave it, but citation #2 has nothing to do with that statement to begin with so it will still require editing. Rx787 16:05, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

NINJA EDIT: nevermind...it is official [1]

This article needs major work. The breakdown of his time at LSU, including individual wins and rankings of opponents at the time of games, is wholly unnecessary. If you want to discuss every season, then fine, but do it in an informative manner that discusses the entire season, and not just random things about what happened in a particular season.

[edit] Importance upgrade

Upgrading to high-importance. The assessment criteria indicate that the coach of a BCS/Top 25 team is high-importance. Given Alabama's historic importance in college football, I believe that the article would now qualify as high-importance. β€” Dale Arnett 09:55, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

The fact that Saban left the Miami Dolphins, a glamorous job in its own right, to become the head coach(mythic figure viewed as larger-than-life in the state of Alabama) of a program that is a giant in the world of college football, has been severely understated. The current text simply reads: "On January 3, 2007 Nick Saban left to take the head coaching job at the University of Alabama"....or something to that effect. If you remember correctly or followed that story, beginnig with the night of January 2, up until January 5, the national media made a big hooplah over this hire. There were many reasons why:

  1. This was the first time in football history a professional coach willingly left to take a job in the college ranks.
  2. The programs involved. Miami is a glamour franchise in the NFL, Alabama is a history-rich juggernaut in the NCAA.
  3. This signaled the return of Alabama to the "big time". Since Paul Bryant's death, Alabama had hired-and-fired 7
coaches. Also during that time, the Crimson Tide had only produced a measly 4 conference championships, and only 1
    national championship(1992).

I just feel there could/should be more to state the importance and the attention this story garnered as Saban became the head coach at Alabama. This was not just any ordinary hire, this was a hire that made a splash and grabbed headlines nationwide.

[edit] info boxes

Could someone with admin privileges please change the info box at the bottom from current NFL coaches (which is now irrelevant) to SEC coaches or something equally pertinent and clean up any other incongruities with the info boxes? Thank you. Corcarpemei 00:57, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Corcarpemei 18:55 CST 1.4.07

I've made a few changes to the overall article:

1) I've deleted all of the actual quotes regarding the Alabama job while he was still at Miami. While his denials should be noted and recognized in the entry, there is no real need to put every quote you can find that he made regarding the job.

2) I took out a lot of the criticism that were being thrown around in the Alabama section of this entry. That particular piece of the entry is about Saban at Alabama, and not necessarily what everyone thought about his move.

3) Updated the links section reflecting the other changes in the entry.

What needs to be done is for there to be a "Criticisms and Defenses" section created so all of the criticism, including the fan-run anti-Saban sites such as GeauxtohellSaban.com, and the people who have came out in defense of Saban, like Spurrier, should be grouped into this section. If I have time in a few days, I'll try to do that. If someone can do it before then, please do so.

[edit] Dolphins Expanded and Others

I've expanded the section about Saban's tenure with the Miami Dolphins, and also updated the links section.

I've also taken out the "Current Sporting Event" tag that was on the Alabama entry, because as is my understanding that is reserved for sporting events that change daily, and I don't really see how that fits here. If I'm wrong, please put it back.

2007 Schedule info needs to be moved to the University of Alabama athletics page

[edit] Quotes section

While many (or all) of the quotes attributed to Saban in the "Quotes" section many be valid β€” I'm pretty sure I heard some of them myself on TV β€” all but one are not cited with sources. They very much need citations. I realize there are many fans of other schools that are using this section to try to cast Saban in a bad light (hello, Auburn), and I have no problem with adding anything that can be verified in print or on a legitimate website (your personal blog doesn't count), particularly since I don't have a dog in this fight. But we have to remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a forum for bashing your arch-rival. We have to have verification. I'm going to try to verify some myself as I have time, but this is something you should do on your own when posting such material. Realkyhick 19:17, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Never mind. I did them all myself. (Sound effect: giving myself pat on back) Realkyhick 20:23, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Criticisms and Defenses

If you have an issue with the criticisms and defenses, which is completely and properly sourced, then you need to bring it to the discussion page, rather than erasing it. Erasing an entire section because you don't agree with it is childish. Grow up and discuss it like an adult.

I will gladly recommend the article to be locked if it is erased again without discussion.

--Mr. Brown 02:14, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

I've been trying to get the article semi-protected for several days. The Powers That Be keep saying their hasn't been enough activity. I suppose there isn't relative to other problematic articles. Realkyhick 04:42, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

I have added info regarding a recording that has surfaced in the last few days, along with Saban's statement regarding the language used in the recording. I really could not think of a better place to put it. Xj14y 04:59, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

I've removed my bit, since I just noticed it was already addressed in the article. Xj14y 05:04, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Someone added a very offensive quote which repeatedly used the N-word, so I deleted it.

Because of this and other persistent vandalism, I've requested that the page be semi-protected, and the WP admins have granted that request. Realkyhick 21:52, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Thank you. I got tired of fixing this page on an almost daily basis. --Mr. Brown 01:32, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Me too. Realkyhick 02:42, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] External Links: Planet Tide Blog

There was a link in the External Links section to some amateur blog named "Planet Tide Blog." It is an Alabama football blog, and has nothing in particular to do with Nick Saban, at least not to the point to justify it being added to this entry.

As is always the case, if you are the moderator or publisher of a blog, don't put it here. If you're blog is not good enough to attract viewers on its own, then that's your problem; you're not going to get free advertising here. It's going to be deleted every time.

[edit] Quotes

Someone removed his famous "I will not coach Alabama" quote, (or at least the one that survived pruning) and replaced it with a Steve Spurrier quote. I restored it. The Steve Spurier quote can go into the Steve Spurrier page, but does not belong here. CodeCarpenter 12:52, 7 March 2007 (UTC) They did it again, without checking the talk pages. Please do not place unsupported comments in the Nick Saban page, such as "the Miami media continually badgered Saban", it was the national media, requesting a definitive answer from him after Alabama sources repeatedly stated that Saban was their choice. CodeCarpenter 18:04, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

I am new to all of this but I figure it out eventually.... the phrase, "Auburn University who reacted out of fear and jealousy" has no basis in fact and should be removed. AU is running out of fingers to hold up and Coach Saban's arrival makes no difference.

It has been removed. Thanks for pointing that out. CodeCarpenter 17:56, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Why no mention that the University of Alabama had to offer Saban the highest salary ever to a college coach, in order to lure him into the mess that is now Tuscaloosa? Guaranteed $32 million over 8 years will make him the highest paid state employee in the State of Alabama and the highest paid NCAA football coach. Bottom line is the fans are sick and tired of the mediocrity that is now Alabama Athletics (see Basketball team), losing to their in-state rival 5 years in a row, and have resorted to "buying" a $4 million/year coach. β€”The preceding unsigned comment was added by 167.64.85.73 (talk)

Maybe that's because it's POV, at least as you expressed it. Save the trash talk for the al.com forums, please. Realkyhick 05:49, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 2003 LSU v. Ole Miss Game

I assume that it was some Ole Miss fan who came in and wrote a novel about the 2003 LSU v. Ole Miss game, but that's not fitting here. The game had the SEC Western division title on the line (and not the entire SEC), LSU won in a classic, and that's about all that needs to be noted on a wiki entry. That portion of that particular section has been deleted.
