Maybe there should be some record of still unidentified samples here.

I was listening in and I definitely heard Jay-Z's "Girls" in Summer Smoke and Alphawezen in Friday Night. Sadly, the music sampler I was tuning in on had no time markers. "Girls" is quick and around 1:15, and Alphawezen kicks in right in the middle of Lady Sov; it's a prominent sample. Thank you, 2 Many DJ's, for your library. I suspect an homage. Someone with a clock mark those? 141.155.160.201 00:09, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

The Alphawezen song is most definitely in that song. It's Alphawezen - "Into The Stars" (Firebirds Remix) (thank you, 2 Many DJ's) and starts at 2:26. (Steve C)

Edited the Mike Jones sample from "Give and Go" - it's the same lyrics as "Back Then" but the violin sample gives it away as "Still Tippin'" --Mike 05:00, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Changed the "Ask About Me" section to show the first sample as being from Spandau Ballet's "True," not PM Dawn, who sampled "True." 141.211.24.23 12:44, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Added the Chris Brown sample in "Warm It Up" Meglocrush 07:37, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't want to edit the page until there's a consensus, but is the guitar riff at about 1:46 into "That's My DJ" from "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey?

I really wish I knew where the bit at 1:38 in Bounce That was from... or is it original? --Spacecow 19:53, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

re: Spaceow : All of the album is unoriginal samples I believe.

[edit] Track 1

The sample - 2:19 Ratatat - "Bustelo" - on track 1 is not from the original Bustelo track from Ratatat. I even checked their remix album and there's nothing from that either that seems to have a sample sounding like that. If this is something from Ratatat, then I think it's from elsewhere and not the quoted track.

Greg Gillis has stated in one of his interviews that he added a synth background to that section of the song.

[edit] Track 7

I suspect there is no DJ Shadow sample here. someone back me up. Maybe kraftwerk if you're lucky. definitely Deaf Mick's Throwdown by Clockwork Voodoo Freaks at about the same time though...

just my 2 cents.

I second that. I have the physical CD, and there is no mention in the liner notes of "DJ Shadow" among the other dozens of sources he has listed there. That "One! Two! Three! Hit it!" sample is used in "The Number Song," but it was sampled from something else by DJ Shadow. We should find the primary source. Matthew McVickar 15:51, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

The numbers in the song are NOT from DJ Shadow's "The Number Song," however, the sample, "Hit it!" almost certainly is. However, in my comprehensive list of samples used in that song, that specific vocal isn't account for. It could be from a Blowfly song or Third Guitar - "Baby Don't Cry," but I doubt it.

[edit] notes

1:38 Bounce That: keyboard/guitar solo continuing sample of "Valerie" by Steve Winwood

1:46 That's My DJ: not Journey...continuing sample of "Blinded by the Light"

Ask About Me: PM Dawn sampled Spandau Ballet, but also included is the beat from the PM Dawn track (which itself is also sampled from a 1974 Soul Searchers track called "Ashley's Roachclip" ([1]) and was used in dozens of late-'80s/early-'90s tracks). Since it was PM Dawn who put the beat and "True" together, the sample here is really of them.

In GT's mySpace page, he lists all of the artists he's sampled under "Sounds Like:" (this may be the same list from the liner notes...I don't know since I got my copy from eMusic). Here are some artists from that list who aren't currently listed in the wiki article: Abba, Dinosaur Jr, Foo Fighters, Garbage, Honeydrippers, Tears for Fears.

  • What about the other albums he did?

My number one "what's that?" right now: the ringing guitar note first heard at 1:28 of "Smash Your Head" and repeated twice more during the Biggie/Elton section -- sounds like U2, maybe from "With or Without You" but I can't place it for sure.

[edit] Joan Jett

There is a verifiable Joan Jett sample at starting at 0:38 of "Overtime" (though it's more recognizable at 0:59 when "Little Lies" starts). It's the three-note drum figure--kick/hi-hat, kick, snare/clap--that appears at 0:11 of "I Love Rock 'N Roll" (and elsewhere in the song), between the guitar chords. If you play them at the same speed and listen closely, you'll see it's an exact match.

[edit] Track 3

Can someone please id the guitar sample on track 3 at 1:25 behind "Laffy Taffy"? It is currently missing from the sample list.

I second this request!!!

omg yes! i third that request! the guitar playing behind "laffy taffy" in "hold up" is driving me freakin crazy. i cant find it anywhere. help!!!

Forthed(?) "laffy taffy" guitar is amazing. Perhaps it is a couple different guitar samples and that is leading to the problem?

Isn't it the 13th track off of Dat Politics cd "Tracto Flirt?" It sounds so much like Dat Politics, but I'm not positive it's the 13th track.

help, please

[edit] Track 16

ok, 1:37 into track 16. what is the electro sample that carries the song out????? i think this is million young by the american analog set

I too think it might be. You can listen to it on their myspace. It does sound a bit different though. Has someone covered it or remixed it (aside from Gillis himself)? Jellypuzzle | Talk 09:40, 8 December 2006 (UTC) Having just put up the liner note credits and found no mention of American Analog Set I'm thinking it's not them after all. It would be very useful if someone could take that list of artists and list on this talk page the artists from it we haven't got in the list of samples. I'm willing to do a few lines of it but some help would be much appreciated. Jellypuzzle | Talk 10:22, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
It's original material by Girl Talk. Freeanjarvis 12 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unverified Samples

As of January 23, 2007:

Abba; Bun B; Calloway; DJ Assault; Diplomats; Dinosaur Jr; Jermaine Dupree; Foo Fighters; G-Unit; Garbage; Al Green; Honey Drippers; Joe Public; Mobb Deep; 'NSYNC; Noreaga; Tears For Fears

I noticed Lil John at around 2:01 in Peak Out, no idea which song though.

Also, here are the samples listed on the wiki Girl Talk does not credit in their liner notes:

Buckwheat Boys; James Brown; Chingy; Daft Punk; DJ Funk; DJ Shadow; Eve; Frankie Cutlass; Bruce Hornsby; The J.B.'s; Los Lonely Boys; M83; N.O.R.E.; Peedi Crakk; The Pointer Sisters; PM Dawn; Ratatat; Shaggy; Spandau Ballet; Steely Dan; Take 6

Possibly check if they've been sampled somewhere else, or they sample another song. For instance, the "Daft Punk" sample is actually sampled in "Touch It" by Busta Rhymes, so it's a sample of a sample. British Ben 08:49, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
