[edit] Primary characters
These are the main characters of Gemini Adventures.
[edit] Castor and Pollux (the Gemini Twins)
Castor and Pollux, also known as the Gemini Twins, are the titular characters of the series. They are both heroic individuals who often go on dangerous adventures together. True to the myth, Castor is an expert horse rider, having received an "A" in his Horse Riding class at Ithaca Academy, and Pollux is good at hand-to-hand combat (he once single-handedly took out Antinous, a bully at the academy, who would grow up to become Odysseus' worst enemy and a suitor of Penelope's). Pollux dislikes being called by his full name, "Polydeuces", since he believes that the name sounds too weird.
[edit] Pandora
Pandora is Castor and Pollux's babysitter (since Leda, their true mother, doesn't appear in the series, although she is mentioned). Left a nervous wreck from her misadventure with "The Box", Pandora is frequently scared by little noises and other such normal occurrences. She also tends to view Castor and Pollux's "adventures" as more chances for them to put themselves in danger. "The Box" sits on the shelf in her living room, with a padlock on it to prevent Pandora (or anyone else for that matter) from opening it and releasing that one last spirit.
[edit] Atalanta
Tooted as "the best dang racer in Ithaca", Atalanta is a teenage girl who can run as fast as a deer and jump as high as a rabbit. Similar to the myth, she is not married to Hippomenes at first, but does develop a crush on him in the episode "The Great Greek Race". She is very cynical of her classmates, especially Castor and Pollux. When the former of the two tried to talk to her but kept stuttering due to shyness, she called her "Short Boy" and walked off with a little chuckle. The goddess Nike, occassionally called "Liberty" in the show, is Atalanta's guardian.
[edit] Sestia
Sestia is one of the Amazon ladies and the daughter of Queen Hippolyta. In the episode "Chasing Beauty", Sestia lures Castor and Pollux to her island by manipulating their teachers into telling the Twins that going will give them extra credit points. Once on the Amazons' island, Sestia plays a dangerous "hide-and-seek" with the boys, where the ground is littered with traps. However, after Pollux almost got hurt, Sestia saw the error of her ways and tried to save the twins from Hippolyta who wanted to eliminate "those pesky boys".
[edit] Gods and Goddesses
[edit] Zeus
The father of Castor and Pollux, as well as numerous other heroes, Zeus is portrayed as a wise old man who sits like a king on his throne. He is able to look down through the clouds that prevent mortals from seeing Mount Olympus and observe the lives of his children. He is loyal to his wife Hera, though like his mythological counterpart, Zeus sometimes finds other ladies that he decides he likes. His weapon of choice is his trusty Lightning Bolt, fashioned by the Cyclopes.
[edit] Hera
The wife of Zeus and aunt to the Twins, Hera is a stern lady who is very much like a housewife. She is stern and can sometimes be bossy, but she loves her children (as well as numerous other heroes, such as Jason). Hera wanted to be guardian of the Twins (in the series, all humans save for the punished Pandora have gods and goddessess protecting them), but Hermes already took up that role.
[edit] Hermes
Hermes is the messenger god and path-finder for lost mortals. He is also the protector of the Gemini Twins and he is responsible for their well-being. However, since the Twins do very well on their own, Hermes seems to feel he has little need to protect them, as he is very rarely shown doing so.
[edit] Nike
Nike is the goddess of victory and the guardian of Atalanta. Little is known about her, except that she is haughty and has a saucy nature, much like the human she attends to. She argues with Hermes in "The Great Race" about fairness after Atalanta tries the same golden apple trick on the Twins that Hippomenes used to beat her in the myths.
[edit] Demeter
Appearing in "Mean Seasons", Demeter is the goddess of agriculture and the mother of Persephone. In the episode, Demeter loses her daughter to Hades after rescuing her, with the Gemini Twins' help, at the end of "Seasons Meetings"; Demeter pleads to Zeus only to learn of the seeds that Persephone ate. The nature goddess breaks down in tears whereby she is comforted by Zeus' vassal Hermes.
[edit] Underworld Gods, Goddesses, and Condemmed Mortals
In the Underworld, there is a hodgepodge of gods and goddesses, as well as deceased humans who are condemmed to an afterlife of misery.
[edit] Hades and Persephone
- Hades' Bio: Hades is the lord of the Underworld and enemy of Castor and Pollux. He is very sadistic and often will resort to force to get what he wants. His palace in the Underworld, called The Palace of the Forbidden, is very lavishly decorated and loudly displays Hades' love of jewels and riches.
- Persephone's Bio: Persephone is a kind and sweet young girl who loves nature (most likely a trait inspired by her mother, Demeter). She is the only person whom the bitter spirits of the Underworld feel that they can talk to and she sometimes listens to their plights like a psychologist. As in the classic myth, Persephone must stay in the Underworld during winter, but is allowed to return (via a black hole-like portal) to the "Above World", as Hades calls it, for the other seasons. Persephone had a major role in the episodes "Seasons Meetings" and "Mean Seasons".
[edit] Charon
The boatman Charon is a bitter man who was brought to the Underworld by Hades to serve his current job of rowing spirits across the River Styx. He is also forced to take a tally on all the spirits, and if he ever misses one, Hades will incinerate his head with a blast of flame. Thus, he always has to keep a correct count. He despises Hades for bringing him here, and also dislikes Persephone for being as close to the sadistic god as she is.
[edit] Spirits in the Underworld
-
- Sisyphus: The same spirit from Greek myths. He is forced to roll a giant rock up a hill, but the rock always rolls back down (comically, it sometimes rolls on top of him) when he reaches the top.
- Tantalus: Cursed with an unquenchable thirst and hunger, he hangs from an apple-laden tree above a small freshwater pond, where the food and water vanish if he tries to reach for them. According to "Seasons Meetings", Tantalus was once a prince who poisoned his father during a feast so that Tantalus could take the throne by guile. While he enjoyed his reign as king, he is condemmed to regret it after death.
- Squirmus: A condemmed spirit made up for the Gemini Tales series, he is a man who, in life, was a thief that tricked people in diving off cliffs into the ocean while he took their money. After he died, he was condemmed to stand knee-deep in a lake while the water kept rising and rising but it always sank lower before it could cover his entire body.
[edit] Monsters
The twins fight many monsters and monster-like enemies during the show's run.
[edit] Harpies
Appearing in the two-part episode "Jason's Argonauts", the Harpies are hideous creatures with the bodies of ravens but the heads of hideous women (as opposed to the Sirens, who have women heads on fish bodies). Jason and his crew had to get past them to retrieve the Golden Fleece, so he had Orpheus attract them with music and the Gemini Twins knock them out with stones.
[edit] Hydra and the Nemean Lion
The six-headed Hydra and the Nemean Lion were enemies of Hercules in his first two tasks given him by Hera. Unlike the myth, where Hera hated the heroic demigod, in the series Hera just wanted to test her son's strength and, most of all, his courage. The twins aided Hercules (since he was a fellow student at the Ithaca Academy) in completing his tasks, but they let Hercules fight off the monsters as they were not willing to risk getting hurt.
[edit] Minotaur
The Minotaur appears in the episode "My College Theseus" where it returns for revenge on Theseus for beating it. Castor and Pollux join forces with Theseus in order to defeat the monster once and for all. It was defeated after Theseus grabbed its remaining horn and threw it into a cage.
[edit] Pegasus and Chimera
In the episode "Horse Sense", Castor and Pollux meet the hero Bellerophon, who is struggling to train his new flying horse Pegasus. Castor, being an expert in raising horses, offers to give the hero some pointers and he drags Pollux along despite the latter's protests. Bellerophon was able to fight the vicious fire-breathing Chimera with little trouble thanks to Castor's strict training. The boys were invited for one last ride on Pegasus before going back to school, which they eagerly accepted.
