[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Molly Moon was found on the steps of Hardwick House in a Moon's Marshmellows box. Miss Adderstone, the Headmistress of Hardwick House, couldn't stand babies so she employed Mrs Trinklebury to raise Molly and Rocky, another baby which was found in a parking lot behind a police station, screaming at the top of his voice. Molly and Rocky were brought up together, and once they were older and out of diapers, Mrs Trinklebury didn't have to raise them anymore, and only came to Hardwick House to do cleaning and laundry.

Molly Moon was always made fun off by the other children in the house, with the exception of Rocky and a few of the younger orphans. Molly had approached Hazel Hackersly, when she first came to the house, to try and make friends with her. Hazel pushed Molly up against the wall, telling her shes better then her, and actually knew her family. She told her they were in a tragic accident, and died. Molly later finds out this is untrue. Molly Moon was always in trouble with the Miss Adderstone, who enjoyed punishing her. Molly Moon gets caught being three times over the allowed bath limit, so Miss Adderstone punishes her by forbidding a bath for the next three weeks, and puts her on toilet cleaning duty, and only allowed to use her toothbrush.

The next day she is woken up by Hazel ringing a loud bell, who then mocks her and reminds her theres cross country and a spelling test. Molly reminds Rocky of the spelling test, which they had both forgotten about. While Molly and Rocky walked to school, one of the boys from the village threw a water bomb at Hazel, which she dodged, and it exploded on Molly, soaking her. Molly and Rocky were late to class trying to dry her cardigan and shirt on a radiator. They run into class and are confronted by Mrs Toadley, who between sneezing fits informs them that they are late, and missed assembly. She tells them she will give them their punishments later, which were imaginative. She once caught Molly chewing paper for the tenth time, so she made her sit in the corner of the classroom and forced her to eat a pile of computer paper. Molly and Rocky took the test, blundering through and guessing the answers. After the spelling test they had cross country. It was pouring with rain and the paths were muddy. Molly had misplaced her gym shoe and her and Rocky had to look for it. By the time they had found it the other students were far ahead. They started to run then stopped to catch their breath. Rocky suggested moving again, which Molly refused, saying she didn't want to. Rocky complained, saying Molly never tries at anything, eventually pointing out that people liked him more then her. Molly retorted, saying that he was always distant and had been disappearing lately, and suggests that he was trying to avoid her. Molly was enraged, and stormed off into the forest.

Molly blasted through the forest, taking her anger out on plants as she walked. She felt cross with Rocky because she thought he liked her as she was, and didn't like him pointing the truth out to her. She wondered if he had been avoiding her. She left the woods, feeling sorry for herself and looked down the hill at the small town of Briersville. She felt jealous of other kids, who even if they had a bad day, they had a family to go home to. She noticed a large Qube advertisement billboard and thought about how it would feel in their world, and thought one day she would escape and start a new life.

Molly went to the town library. As she walked in the librarian looked up and told her she recognised the school anorak, and thought it was Rocky, as he had been going there a lot. Molly realised that this is where Rocky had been going and wondered if he was avoiding her again. She walked along the rows of bookshelfs, stopping at Z. Molly enjoyed sitting by the Z shelf, It was a snug place where not many people went. She propped her head up on a cushion and fell asleep listening to the librarian's soothing voice on the telephone. It is later revealed that she was actually hypnotised by the librarian to take the Hypnotism book, who is revealed to be Molly's mother in the second book.

She woke up to hear an American man yelling at the librarian, who claimed to be a Professor from a museum, who had come to purchase a book, which the librarian had misplaced. He yelled at her, refusing to take his cheque back and telling her he wanted the book. He told her the author's name was Logan, and it started with H. He eventually gave up and told her if they found the book, to ring him at the hotel he was staying at, and after giving her his card, he left. Molly wondered what kind of book he was looking for, and why the museum needed it. She looked at the books near her, wondering what was more important then them. She noticed one titled 'Ypnotism', and took it from the shelf. After she had opened the cover and noticed it was actually titled 'Hypnotism', she hid it under her anorak and left the library.

Molly went back to Hardwick House, where everyone was practising for the upcoming Talent Competition. The orphans were also informed that an American couple were coming who were interested in adopting a child. Molly started reading the book when no one was around, and successfully put herself into a trance. The next morning, instead of going to school, she faked being sick and got moved into the sanatorium. She continues to read the book and succeeds in hypnotising Petula, Miss Adderstones pet pug. She teaches the pug not to eat the chocolate biscuits, as it is causing it stomach ache.

Molly continued studying the Hypnotism book, noticing it was missing two chapters, Chapter Seven, 'Hypnotising Using the Voice Alone', and Chapter Eight, 'Long-Distance Hypnosis. When everyone was away from the house, she went down and went to the kitchen. She hypnotised Edna, using her eyes and stirring the pot in a rhythm. She hypnotised Edna to be really nice to her and to defend her, and to become interested in Italian cooking, and try to become the best Italian chef. She also commanded her to make Miss Adderstone, Hazel and Hazel's friends very spicy food.

The next day Molly Moon encounters Hazel and attempts to hypnotise her, which fails. Hazel reveals to Molly that Rocky had been chosen by the American couple and had left the house without saying goodbye.

Molly remembers about the chapter detailing hypnotising crowds, and thinks about entering the Talent Competition and attempt to hypnotise the crowd to win the prize.

Miss Adderstone confronts Molly and states that since Rocky has left, all his punishments will be given to Molly. Molly hypnotises Miss Adderstone, and forces her to show Molly her record, and also finds out about Miss Adderstone's past.

Molly tests her hypnotism at the practise of the Talent Competition in Hardwick House. She successfully convinces the audience that she was telling them hilarious jokes, which they enjoyed.
