Okotoks Dawgs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Okotoks Dawgs are a baseball team based in Okotoks, Alberta, Canada. The Dawgs play in the Western Major Baseball League, a college summer league. The franchise is currently suspended while a new ballpark is built in Okotoks.
Originally known as the Calgary Dawgs, they played at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, where they often came into conflict with the professional clubs they shared the facility with. As a result of conflicts with the Calgary Vipers, the Dawgs were denied the ability to play in Foothills Stadium by the Vipers, and were forced to suspend operations for the 2006 season as they were unable to find an alternate field to use.
Formed in 2003, the Dawgs were immediately successful on the field, finishing 2nd in the Western Division. In 2004, the Dawgs won the WMBL Championship, sweeping the Swift Current Indians in three games. The Dawgs clinched the title at home, in front of a league record crowd of 3,462. The Dawgs were unable to defend their title in 2005, falling in the second round of the playoffs.
On June 6, 2006, the Dawgs announced that they will relocate from Calgary to the nearby community of Okotoks for the 2007 WMBL season, becoming the Okotoks Dawgs. The team will play out of a new ballpark, to be known as the Seaman Stadium and Field House, a 2,000 seat stadium with a maximum capacity of 4,500. The new park will be constructed as the result of a public-private partnership, with land for the park being donated by Calgary-based Nexen Inc.
Renderings of the new park are available on the team's website: Dawgs new ballpark.
