Ono (weapon)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ono is the Japanese word for axe, and as such it is used to describe various tools of the similar basic structure. As with axes in other cultures, ono are sometimes employed as weapons. Generally four feet long with a heavy, oversized steel blade. The few existing academic references to this weapon and documentation of extant examples are in connection with the sohei, warrior monks, who also adapt other agricultural tools as weapons. Ono specifically designed for military use is of extreme rarity.
