Palmetto Capital City Classic
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Palmetto Capital City Classic is an annual event in Columbia, South Carolina centered around a college football game played between Benedict College and Johnson C. Smith University. The game is played in Williams-Brice Stadium.
Since the event's inception in 2002 South Carolina State University had been Benedict's opponent, but SCSU withdrew after 2004 because scheduling a Division II opponent would hurt the Division I-AA school's efforts at gaining a position in the NCAA I-AA football tournament. The Bulldogs, despite their national ranking and record, did not receive a bid, and some at the school believed playing the weaker opponent affected them, so they wanted to schedule better schools.
The 2005 game's halftime entertainment include popular artist Jermaine Dupri.
