[edit] Any help needed?
- Let me know if I can help in the setting up of this portal. Since I've just set up Portal:Oceania, I'm familiar with the process. As soon as this portal is out of the construction phase, we'll link to it as a subportal.-gadfium 02:42, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
- Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated :) I'm learning as I go, so if you were wanting to flesh out or delete if appropriate any of the boxes that would be fantastic. In particular I'm not sure how to set up the "Requests" section or the rotation of weekly pics/articles. Once I've constructed the outline, I'll need to expand the search for related content.TMac 03:51, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
To have automatic rotation weekly, look at Portal:New Zealand or Portal:Australia. They have a section which used the metavariables CURRENTWEEK and CURRENTYEAR to link to the featured article. The actual featured article is at Portal:Australia/Featured article/Week 8, 2006, and more articles are queued up by incrementing the week number in the article title. At midnight on Sunday night (3 pm Monday for Eastern Australia), the CURRENTWEEK variable will increment and the article for week 9 will be displayed.
You might like to start off with monthly rotation of features, and then step up the pace when you have more people interested in helping and/or you've got the maintenance down to a fine art. See the Oceania portal for monthly rotation of articles (but note we also do daily rotation of the countries which make up Oceania).
For the archive of selected articles, set up a page similar to [[Portal:Australia/Featured article/2006]]. That will consist of repeated sections, one per week. Note that you have to use underscores rather than spaces for the line that links to the article's history.
I just commented out the sections I didn't want to use immediately on Portal:Oceania, using html commenting: ie <!-- This is a comment -->.
I can't really add content for you, since I don't know what you want. You might like to copy the Requests pane from the Oceania portal. I wrote up a news story on PNG yesterday, so I'll copy that across to start your news section.-gadfium 04:54, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
- I have an article on the Culture of PNG ready to go for April for the Oceania portal. See Portal:Oceania/Selected article/April, 2006. Do you want me to set it up for you as your first selected article? That will give you until Monday afternoon to get another one organised, or until the end of the month if you decide monthly selections are preferable. The Oceania portal will probably debate whether we'll still use it as we have a policy of not having selected articles from Australia or New Zealand as they're sub-portals, and PNG should be treated similarly.-gadfium 05:21, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
It's looking good!-gadfium 07:45, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
- There's now a portal on WikiNews for PNG, so the link from the news section now works.-gadfium 21:59, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
W00t! Thanks for the assistance so far :) I'm hoping to get some more done today. Feel free to run with the culture article on Oceania - I think I might start with an overview of some of the cities, to keep it easy, for the first few weeks. Will probably also go for a daily picture rotation once I can find 31 pictures. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tim macready (talk • contribs) 22:11, 23 February 2006 (UTC).
[edit] Maintainer needed
Does anyone want to take over maintenance of this portal? User:Tim macready no longer appears to be active on Wikipedia.-gadfium 00:13, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- I've had one person express an interest, and I've done some minimal fixup on the portal. More maintainers would be better.-gadfium 02:11, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
