Pendragon Castle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pendragon Castle is a picturesque ruin located in Mallerstang Common close to the village of Outhgill, Cumbria.
By legend the castle was supposedly built by Uther Pendragon father of King Arthur, he is said to have tried to divert the river to provide a moat, but to have failed: Let Uther Pendragon do what he can: / Eden will run where Eden ran.
The castle was originally built in the 12th Century and has a Norman Keep with the later addition of a 14th Century Garderobe Turret. The castle is privately owned and cannot currently be accessed by the public due largely to the perilous state of the ruins. Some restoration work was performed on the castle by Lady Anne Clifford in the late 17th Century.
