[edit] Synopsis
Michael meets with each of his employees to discuss their job performance. He plunders the employee suggestion box for ideas to impress his own boss, Jan, but the ruse backfires and he embarrasses himself. Encouraged by Jim and Pam, Dwight mistakes a Thursday for a Friday and arrives at the office very late the next day.
[edit] Trivia
- For a list of songs featured in this episode, see List of songs featured on The Office (US TV series).
- The office building where the Scranton branch of Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company located is also the home of W.B. Jones Heating and Air, and Vance Refrigeration, which is owned by Bob Vance, husband to Phyllis Lapin.
- When Michael is in the conference room reading the pages from the suggestion box, Angela tells him he has coffee breath. Steve Carell improvised the line, "Oh yeah, is that hard for you?" and, in turn, Angela Kinsey improvised her response, "When you talk real close it is."
- In the Season 2 DVD, the deleted scenes for this episode revealed the story behind the production photo of Dwight with a self-promoting sign that had been posted on NBC.com. In order to impress Michael and receive a raise Dwight used the letters of his name to provide adjectives for himself. D-Determined, W-Worker, I-Intense, G-Good Worker, H-Hard Worker, T-Terrific. Jim Halpert then comes up with his own version, to irritate Dwight. J-Jim, I-Is Jim, M-My Name Is Jim. Dwight, unaware of the gag, tells Jim that he is wasting his M.
- This is the only episode to feature a subtitle giving the date at the end.
- The opening joke with the fitness orb is actually a blooper. The orb was supposed to deflate slowly, but John Krasinski hit a seam, and it popped. (You can see the other actors in the scene reacting out of character.) The producers liked the take so much they kept it.[1]
- When rehearsing the scene where Michael welcomes Jan to the office, Steve Carell accidentally touched Melora Hardin's breast. She thought it was so funny that she insisted they incorporate it into the scene.[1]
- Dwight quotes from the television program Smallville, The Office and Smallville would eventually go head to head on Thursday nights.
