Electron Microscopy reconstruction of Pneumolysin, taken from S.J. Tilley, E.V. Orlova, R.J.C. Gilbert, P.W. Andrew and H.R. Saibil, Structural Basis of Pore Formation by the Bacterial Toxin Pneumolysin (2005) Cell 121 , pp. 247–256. http://www.cellpress.com/
Fair use as an illustration not create-able by me, and as a good example in the pore forming toxins page. The Left hand panel shows the pre-pore state - i.e. a circular, multimeric structure sitting on the cell surface ready to push through the cell membrane. The right hand panel shows the pore state - i.e. after the push through the cell membrane.
