The user PotatoSamurai was created Monday, August 1st of 2005, by Daniel Kinley. Before creating this account, I had edited a few entries on subjects I knew, such as creating the section at the end of the Dark Matter article pertaining to games. As a humanist, I see the spread of knowledge as one of the highest goals of humanity and as one of the duties of the intelligent. One of the vital factors to a democracy is the existence of an enlightened public -- that is, one who knows the issues at hand and realizes their vote is what matters.

'PotatoSamurai' as a screenname was conceived by me a few years ago, when I created an account for Xbox Live. The name derives from my (nearly obsessive) love of Japanese culture and history. During the Satsuma Rebellion, shortly after the Meiji Restoration in which feudal Japan was being rebuilt as a modern nation, the rebels had little food and money. Northern samurai, who had primarily joined the Imperial Army and police force, taunted them as 'potato samurai', because they could not even afford to eat rice and had to scrounge for potatoes.
At the time, it was just a random name I picked out of the blue. Nonetheless, I do like it: most people have found it funny, even if the historical point is far from their comprehension.
My goal in life is to become an English teacher in Japan, after getting my bachelor's degree and joining the JET (Japanese exchange and teaching) program. I would ride that wave until the program runs out, if indeed it does, returning to the US to get a master's and returning once to Japan more to stay for good. If all goes as planned, I will end my life in Japan.
