[edit] Format
Primera B Metropolitana is currently organised into two league tournaments, Apertura (opening) and Clausura (closing). There are 22 participants in Primera B, each team plays the other 21 teams once in the Apertura, and then once again at the reverse venue in the Clausura.
The winners of the two league titles are recognised as champions but the overall championship is decided with an end of season playoff.
The Champions of Primera B gain promotion to Nacional B which is made up of 10 teams from Buenos Aires and 10 from the interior. The next 8 best teams enter a playoff series to determine which team will face the metropolitan team with the 2nd worst points aggregate in the promotion/relegation playoff.
The team with the lowest points aggregate in Primera B is relegated to Primera C Metropolitana, while the team with the 2nd worst points aggregate must play a promotion/relegation playoff with the winner of the Primera C playoff series.
[edit] History
The metropolitan third tier of Argentine football has been known as Primera B Metropolitana since the reorganisation for the start of the 1998-1999 season.
