Product Development and Management Association, or PDMA, is a non-profit international advocate for professional product developers and managers. Their slogan is "Connecting Innovators Worldwide."[1]
PDMA, whose chief executive officer (CEO) is Robin Karol,[2] attempts to increase the effectiveness for individuals, and organizations attempting to develop or manage new products. They currently have 3,000 members internationally[3], with 24 local American chapters, and six international chapters, including one in India.[4]
Each year they hold the PDMA international conference, which has been taking place since 1976, in a different venue across America each year. The conference has been described as a "one stop shop" as it covers information ranging from new practices in product development to how to manage a successful product life cycle.[5] Paul Belliveau, a past president of PDMA, said, "This five-day event provides the latest information on product development across a variety of industries."[6] PDMA also sponsors other similar conferences each year, including the Front End of Innovation conference.[7]
PDMA has published books, including the bimonthly Journal of Product Innovation Management, which, published by Blackwell Publishing,[8] contains a wide range of information, including new technology, and research regarding product development and management; Visions Magazine, published quarterly, contains information about tools and techniques for product development and management; the industry standard[9] PDMA Handbook of New Product Development (Second Edition) contains information about every stage regarding product development[10]; and they have published two toolbooks title, PDMA Toolbooks for New Product Development[11][12], which offers practice tools for product managers. A third toolbook is expected to be published by fall, 2007. In 2004 the Journal of Product Innovation Management, edited by Anthony Di Benedetto[8] was named the tenth best business/academic journal.[13] The Visions Magazine has won "Most Improved Magazine" by ACE in 2003, in 2005 it won an award for their online alert system,[14] and on January 9, 2007, the Indiana Society of Association Executives announced that Visions Magazine won the best magazine award for 2007.[15]
PDMA created the first certification for new product professionals, called New Product Development Professional (NPDP) certification. Over 500 people have achieved certification through this process.[16]
Each year PDMA awards their Outstanding Corporate Innovators Award to companies who show success in launching new products over five years, company growth from developing new products, and a new product development cycle.[17][18] The 2006 award went to the Xerox Corporation, and the Bank of America.[19]
On the January 30, 2007, PDMA announced a new board of directors, with Dr. Hamsa Thota being named Chair.[3]
A joint survey by PDMA and The Management Roundtable found that around 80% of all companies were not pleased with how they developed new products, especially when it came to executive involvement and IT support.[20]
PDMA periodically conducts a "Best Practices in NPD" study. These studies have been conducted in 1991, 1997, and 2004, under the aegis of the PDMA Foundation, an organized IRS 501(c)(3) for charitable and educational purposes, including education and research related to the field of product development management. The studies provide key industry benchmarks on factors relating to success in new product development.
